Tell us more about your interests and hobbies, if any?

Taking time to enjoy life is often something entrepreneurs overlook. Working more hours than the average 9-5 employee seems to be a requirement if you want to succeed. For many years, I worked 80-112 hours per week. I didn’t have time to do anything besides work.

I made a decision a few years ago to start enjoying life. As a result, I’ve been traveling a lot, and although most of my travels are for speaking engagements, you can still have a lot of fun on the road!

I’m driving one of my dream cars, so I try to take time to go on a drive once in a while & listen to the twin-turbo V8 growl. Some days, I wake up and ride the motorcycle a couple of hundred miles just to have lunch in a different town. Mountain biking was a huge passion for a few years before my injury, and I enjoy playing electric guitar.

What is your favorite location you’ve visited?

A few years ago, my mom & I stayed with some friends in Jamaica who run an orphanage & a school for young kids who lost their parents. We spent ten days helping remodel the library, build a playground, and help the kids with crafts & projects.

A small internet cafe on a dirt road offered incredibly slow internet. No one had social media, but the kids were obsessed with my smartphone. Every kid wanted to take a selfie with us. They were incredibly polite, and it was heartwarming to see how the older kids took care of the little ones and offered snacks, toys, and games to the younger kids before taking their own turns.

I look forward to revisiting them soon!

What is your educational background?

I went to college for avionics (aviation electronics) and graduated at the top of my class, but I never worked in the aviation field. I’d like to buy an experimental aircraft in the future.

Please share an incident when you faced failure.

I’ve had plenty of failures in business. But unfortunately, they were almost always due to overlooking my gut feeling about a potential business partner I had a bad feeling about or (early on) doing business on a handshake agreement and trusting someone I shouldn’t have.

I learned 20+ years ago to get everything in writing—document business conversations via email or text. I love people, and I trust everyone by default, so putting things in writing helps a lot!

You’ve owned a pharmaceutical company, a medical clinic, retail stores, and a telecommunications company. So how did you end up becoming a business coach?

I’ve always loved building businesses, and I love people. So I’ve consulted with business owners for years, helping them improve strategies and processes, and I’ve helped quite a few struggling businesses become profitable.

After a while, I got good at it and decided to share my knowledge with others through books, speaking, and coaching.

There’s no substitute for hard work to achieve business success, but there are shortcuts. Find a mentor, get a coach, and read business books! You don’t have to reinvent the wheel – learn from those who have already achieved what you want to achieve.

What is the meaning of life to you?

First and foremost, I want to live in a way that pleases the Lord.

I get the most incredible sense of satisfaction when I know I’ve helped someone improve their life or business. When someone reads one of my books and sends a message on social media, thanking me for changing their life, or hugs me after hearing me speak at a conference, I feel like I’m changing the world, at least for that person.

I think my reason for being here is to uplift and inspire others.

What do you know now that you didn’t know four years ago?

One thing I wish I’d known four years ago is how important it is to create a personal brand. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve built some incredibly successful businesses, but I finally started making a personal brand for M. Curtis McCoy a few years ago.

When you create a solid personal brand, you can change industries or launch a new project, and people automatically follow! I wish I’d have started building my personal brand 20+ years ago instead of just three or four years ago.

Let’s talk about your books; are more coming?

I’m currently writing two more books about personal identity & also about personal branding. My last book, How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader, was a #1 bestseller globally in 9 categories, and I’m writing two more books now that will be available soon if you search M. Curtis McCoy on Amazon!

I’m still interviewing high-caliber leaders. If you know someone who’s created a great personal brand, or a leader who can share their insights on personal identity, have them send me a message so we can connect, or they can submit a chapter draft by visiting this link: Co-author a bestselling book with M. Curtis McCoy.

If they’re chosen for an interview, an entire chapter will be written about them, and they’ll be featured as a co-author in my next book! When the book reaches bestseller status, they will automatically become a bestselling co-author!

Where can people find you?

You can find me on most social networks by searching M. Curtis McCoy or visit my website if you’d like to connect with me about a speaking engagement.
