Pop-rock artist Emily Ryan is back with “Discreet,” a new single featuring Brooklyn rapper Fivio Foreign that dropped August 14. The track marks a shift for Ryan, whose catalog has largely leaned on autobiography. This time she’s writing outside her own story.
“It’s not based on mine or my friends’ lives, it’s just a fiction story,” Ryan said. “I find it fun to write tracks like this because it’s almost like being back in the theater. I get to play a character, and it adds another element of fun to my job.”
That character comes through in the sound too. “Discreet” is built for going out rather than sitting still, the kind of song made for a bar or a workout rather than a quiet night in.
The Fivio Foreign feature has been years in the making. Ryan originally planned to include it on her 2023 debut album, but technical setbacks got in the way. Rather than scrap the idea, she shelved it and brought it back for this release. “I’m so happy we did it this way,” she said, “because I’m really excited for everyone to hear this one.”
Behind the boards, the track came together with producer Ray Lennon, whose credits include Fetty Wap, PNB Rock and Queen Honey, and co-writer Curtis Richardson, who has worked with Rihanna, Joss Stone, Jennifer Lopez and David Guetta. It was recorded at Penthouse Studios in Midtown Manhattan and engineered by Max Lowe.
The single arrives at a high point for Ryan. She’s hitting her highest monthly Spotify listener numbers to date, seeing her strongest radio play yet, and keeping a busy live schedule that recently included a set at Midtown Music in Herald Square. Her sound draws from Lady Gaga, 1980s rock, P!nk and Florence Welch, and she performs with a full band. She also just wrapped a four-day session in Atlanta with producer Ghost Kid, known for his work with Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Usher, Robin Thicke and DaBaby, resulting in four new singles still to come.
