INTERVIEW: The Flik Flak Minis

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Good but exhausted! Rock and roll is tiring work, especially when you’ve got homework to do on the side!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Get It Rolling”?

Yeah, it’s our feel-good hit of the summer holidays. We want every kid out there to forget about school and kick back to this one.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

On the school bus actually! We’d had a long day at school, teachers giving us grief as usual, and we were waiting for our ride to set off. Maia, who’s a bit of a rebel, yelled out ‘get it rolling’, and the rest is history.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was great. We wrote it all in one evening at Rivkah’s house – her parents have a pretty cool basement so we can play without getting on the neighbors’ nerves – and we just rocked out, let loose, and before bedtime we had a track, ready to go.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

We work amazingly as a team; everyone brings something to the table. But we’ve only worked with each other so far, this is our first proper band. But I’m pretty sure if we do some kind of collaboration in the future, we’ll all play nice with the other kids.

How did you come up with the idea for the name for the band?

Well, we’ve all got our own style… Jesse’s an indie boy, Rohan’s a bit of a punk kid, Maia is the glam rock front runner, and Rivkah is the grunge girl. But even though we’re different, we all wear Flik Flak watches, so we just went with it.

With so many genres to go with – what made you want to go for a much more old school rock and roll sound?

We think we took ‘old school’ and gave it a twist, making a completely fresh subgenre. We’ve been calling it ‘new school’, and it’s kinda stuck!

Rock and Roll, especially in the old days, was pretty dirty – how did you get to sanitize the music or what aspects of the genre did you get to deep dive?

We think rock and rollers are all kids at heart… they reject the rules, they get loud, they shout about things they hate, they let loose and mess around. So, we write about what we know, and we know about what we write. Simple as.

How the likes of Zeppelin and the Stones get to influence the writing and music on the song?

Who are they? Are they on YouTube? If we don’t know them, then they’re old news. They might’ve been big before, but it’s time for them to move over, there’s new kids on the music scene now.

Is the band disbanding after this project or can we expect new music? How’s that coming along?

Why would we? We’re just getting into our stride, why leave rock and roll to the grown-ups!?

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yeah we’ve got some bangers ready to go… listen out for “Smells Like Pre-Teen Spirit”, “Won’t get schooled again” “(Pocket) Money” “Welcome to the Playground”.

We’ve got a whole album, ready to go!

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes, as soon as school breaks for summer, we’re going to get rolling!

What else is happening next in your world?

Puberty… and we’re not looking forward to it.

For Rankin…

Kids and animals tends to be the hardest people to work with – what was it like to work with this band in particular?

Madness but in a good way. These guys go bigger than Courtney Love, harder than Nirvana, more outrageous than Oasis, it was like shooting The Rolling Stones. I loved it.

What would you say was the key to get everything in control?

Who wants control when you’re working with a rock band? The best thing to do is let them go for it and try to keep up!
