VENTS: Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
THE FALLING DOVES: Good, thank you for having us. We’re excited for this new chapter.
VENTS: After more than a decade of touring and releasing music around the world, the band are entering what you describe as a new era. What feels fundamentally different about the band at this point in your journey?
THE FALLING DOVES: I think the stress of proving yourself is gone, and now we can go back to making music we love. Sure, we have always been in competition with ourselves, but technically, we needed to cater to the world, and that opened up so many doors. We learned to become better all around.
Now it’s a new chapter, splitting songwriting duties with Katie and giving her a voice and a true hand in every part of the process.
VENTS: “Blinded By Your Love” combines classic British rock with the cinematic energy of Los Angeles. How did you bring those two sides of your musical identity together, and what made this particular sound feel right for the next chapter?
THE FALLING DOVES: It just was, and it has always been a part of us. Sadly, we stayed away from the “commercial sound” because we wanted to be able to play festivals and tour with harder rock bands. But we are a little pop-rock band who loves The Beatles and New Wave.
VENTS: You’ve described the new material as the result of finally finding a constant co-writer and collaborator in Katie. What changed in your songwriting process once you had someone whose perspective was involved in every lyric and song?
THE FALLING DOVES: I write super fast, and sometimes I run over partners and collaborators because I can play every instrument mega-fast, no shit given, no second thought! But finally, there is no rush, and it is fun to see what we create together.
VENTS: You mentioned that musicians can sometimes be afraid of anything that sounds remotely commercial. How have your views on melody, accessibility, and writing a great hook changed over the years?
THE FALLING DOVES: Man, I write at will, thank God. I am a crazy OCD songwriter. I stay away from the guitar, or I could make an album in a day. I think things just get better and more fine-tuned with time. If Katie likes it, I’m on the right track.
VENTS: The band have recorded at Abbey Road and worked with artists and mentors from The Rembrandts to Scott Weiland, while sharing stages with an incredibly diverse range of rock acts. Which of those experiences fundamentally changed the way you approach being a musician?
THE FALLING DOVES: The Rembrandts will forever be our parents. They taught us that it is okay for songs to be pop-ish, and I love harmonies. Scott was a great lover of melody. And look, we love loud guitars, in-your-face type of stuff, so who knows where this will go?
VENTS: Your catalog now includes more than 48 releases across studio albums, live recordings, singles, and collaborations. When you look back at that body of work, do you see a clear evolution in the band’s sound, or more of a collection of different chapters?
THE FALLING DOVES: Bro, it is more like 62, but who is counting?
It is the evolution of a band, and there is no format or gimmick. That’s the beauty of the kind of music we make. We have been in and out with labels and still always produce what feels right.
VENTS: You’re returning to the UK and Europe for an extensive tour that includes the UK, Ireland, and Spain, while also bringing Aleks Syntek into select performances. What excites you about putting your British rock identity alongside an artist with such a deep connection to Mexican pop and songwriting?
THE FALLING DOVES: He is as excited as we are. He loves the same bands we love, and he is super smart and dedicated. I feel we can take it higher with him when we finally collaborate. Culturally, Mexico loooves Britpop.
VENTS: Aleks has collaborated with artists ranging from Elton John and Duran Duran to Shakira and Juanes. When you first connected with him, what did you discover about his musical world that you hadn’t expected?
THE FALLING DOVES: He does not take himself seriously. He wants people to see the genius that he is, which he has earned by becoming the go-to guy. I think he is settling into enjoying where he is in life and being present.
VENTS: “Blinded By Your Love” sounds like a song designed for both a huge stage and an open road, with anthemic energy and memorable hooks. When you’re writing a song, how much do you think about its eventual life in a live setting?
THE FALLING DOVES: I love being inspired, man. This one I wrote as a thank you to Katie for being a badass and believing in me, and also to the beautiful city of Prague. So, it’s a love letter to both.
I’m not sure how it’s going to sound live, but I guess that’s part of the journey, innit?
VENTS: After years of international touring, dozens of releases, and now this new creative partnership with Katie, what do you hope people hear in The Falling Doves today that tells them this isn’t simply another chapter, but the beginning of something new?
THE FALLING DOVES: I don’t know where things are going, but I know people and fans know what they are going to get. With this album, we are taking the most unusual amount of time to let it harvest. But I know folks will be happy with the results
