The dissolution of a relationship rarely produces a straightforward emotional response. Affection can persist alongside resentment, regret can coexist with longing, and attempts at distraction often reveal more about unresolved feelings than they conceal. These contradictions form the foundation of bipolar, a five-track EP from pop and R&B artist Adessa.
Developed over approximately two months, the project marks the artist’s first release under his new professional identity. Across its five compositions, Adessa examines romantic disillusionment through themes of deception, escapism, and emotional dependence.
The opening track, “apate,” takes its title from the Greek goddess of deceit. Its narrative addresses dishonesty within an intimate relationship and the psychological consequences of betrayal, establishing the project’s underlying emotional conflict.
“so, about last night” introduces a contrasting perspective. Addressing alcohol consumption and other potentially destructive coping mechanisms, the track adopts a dance-oriented approach to subject matter considerably darker than its presentation suggests.
The subsequent selections, “yeah, no way” and “us,” precede the closing title track, where the project’s central contradiction becomes most apparent. On “bipolar,” Adessa examines the uncomfortable coexistence of humiliation, regret, and lingering affection. Despite recognizing the relationship’s damaging consequences, he acknowledges an attachment that remains difficult to relinquish.
Rather than offering resolution, the EP presents emotional instability as an experience that resists convenient conclusions. As an introductory statement, bipolar establishes Adessa’s interest in psychologically complex songwriting, combining contemporary pop and R&B influences with an examination of relationships and their lasting emotional consequences.
