The Surf Guitar 101 Festival (SG101) will take over the Golden Sails Hotel in Long Beach, California on Aug. 1-3. For the 16th edition of the annual musical showcase and subculture celebration, over two dozen musical groups from around the world will showcase their chops.
This year’s featured acts include The Phantom Surfers (San Francisco), Jackie & The Cedrics (Japan), The Space Agency (UK), Deadbolt (San Diego), The Surf Coasters (Japan), The Aqua Velvets (San Francisco), and Jimmy Dale (son of Dick Dale). In addition to the headlining acts, there will also be panels with the featured musicians, performances by tribute bands, DJs, vendors, pool parties, a vintage bikini contest, and a full bar, among other attractions.
The festival was founded in 2008 by surf music lover Jeff “Big Tiki Dude” Hanson. In 2023, the operation expanded when Hanson was joined by two new partners, MuSick Recordings Founder and President Art Bourasseau and Stellar Shows Promoter Christopher Burkhardt. Over the years, the festival has hosted many popular surf bands, including The Bomboras, The Boss Martians, Messer Chups, Jon & The Nightriders, The Ghastly Ones, The Surfrajettes, and Satan’s Pilgrims.
“Surf music has been a worldwide phenomenon ever since, enjoying a ‘third wave’ revival in the 1990s – after featuring prominently in hit Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction,” said an event rep. “Today, surf music continues to thrive as a vibrant, vivacious scene which boasts distinctive fashion, artwork, and kitschy humor. This year’s SG101 reflects the genre’s global diversity, gathering top surf artists from Europe, Japan, and the U.S.”
