Greg DeShields Checks In, Chats with Podcast Hosts Miranda Kitterlin-Lynch & Leon A. Thomas

Renowned hospitality expert Greg DeShields recently chatted with Miranda Kitterlin-Lynch on her podcast “Checking Inn, a Lodging DEI Chat.” Their engaging conversation touched upon the current landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the hospitality industry.

A Rich History of Advocacy for Inclusion

DeShields has been a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the hospitality sector for several decades. His extensive legacy of efforts and involvement has aimed to promote and ensure inclusivity across various aspects of society. DeShields recognizes and accommodates the diverse needs and perspectives of individuals from marginalized or underrepresented groups. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone, regardless of background, is treated fairly and respectfully. DeShields’ unwavering commitment to DEI has positively impacted the hospitality industry and beyond.

A Veteran of the Hospitality Industry

Reminiscing about his illustrious career in the hospitality industry, Greg illuminated his humble beginnings at Johnson & Wales University and his management of hotel brands such as Hyatt, Sheraton, and Omni. Not restricting himself to conventional paths within hospitality, Greg extended his expertise to nonprofit organizations and Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management.

DeShields stressed the importance of curiosity and openness towards unexplored career paths in the industry, saying, “Look beyond the operational side of the industry. Be curious and receptive to new opportunities, even if they seem unconventional.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Greg illuminated the sweeping changes he has witnessed in DEI throughout his career. Highlighting the shift from affirmative action programs of the past to the current strategic focus on diversity, Greg asserted the importance of integrating DEI into every facet of the industry, such as marketing, supply, and talent acquisition.

Speaking on the industry’s efforts to boost the number of black managers and owners, DeShields recognized the setback caused by the pandemic. Still, he emphasized the pressing need to attract and retain talent and encouraged diversity in consulting or real estate career paths.

Advocacy for Black Hotel Ownership

Greg expressed his admiration for the work done by the National Association of Black Hotel Owners, Operators, and Developers in encouraging more individuals to consider hotel ownership. He stated, “The importance of attracting and retaining talent in the hospitality industry goes beyond just employment. It’s about creating opportunities for black individuals to become owners and leaders in their field.”

Greg’s Career Advice for Aspiring Hospitality Professionals

DeShields recalled advice he would give his 20-year-old self, emphasizing the importance of confidence in decision-making. He reflected on his early career, “You need the confidence to decide about your career progression. Don’t feel obliged to stay in one place for too long.”

A Culinary Sidestep

The conversation took a light-hearted detour when Miranda asked if Greg had ever tried a Maryland crab cake. With a chuckle, Greg confirmed he had sampled this local delicacy at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, precisely at Phillips. This anecdote turned into a heartwarming father-son story about Greg’s son’s ambition to join Johnson & Wales to become a chef and a restaurant manager.

In essence, Greg DeShields’ appearance on the “Checking Inn, a Lodging DEI Chat” was not only enlightening but also underscored the importance of DEI in today’s hospitality industry, making it a must-listen for industry professionals and enthusiasts alike.
