Anna Thoresen Turns Toxic Romance into Indie Pop Drama on “Russian Roulette”

Some relationships are difficult to leave, even when the warning signs are impossible to ignore. For Los Angeles-based artist Anna Thoresen, that complicated emotional territory becomes the foundation of “Russian Roulette,” a bold indie pop and alt-rock track that explores the dangerous attraction of knowing something is wrong but wanting it anyway.

Released as the first single from her forthcoming debut album Hollywood Forever, scheduled to arrive in March 2027, “Russian Roulette” captures the tension between desire and self-preservation. Rather than presenting heartbreak as a straightforward experience, Thoresen explores the thrill, guilt and impulsiveness that can keep someone attached to an unhealthy relationship. The song’s central idea revolves around emotional risk-taking, where excitement repeatedly wins over better judgment.

Thoresen’s storytelling is particularly compelling because it acknowledges the imbalance between two people seeking entirely different things. While she was hoping for a meaningful relationship, the other person viewed the encounter as something temporary. That difference gives the track an uncomfortable honesty, highlighting how attraction can sometimes overpower emotional clarity.

Musically, the single embraces a more daring side of Thoresen’s artistic identity. Her commanding vocals sit alongside energetic pop-rock arrangements, synth-driven textures and an alt-rock edge. The result is theatrical without losing its emotional core. Lines such as “you hurt so good / I won’t stop when I should” capture the contradictions at the heart of the song, while its provocative title reinforces the idea of repeatedly gambling with one’s emotions.

The accompanying music video takes the concept into an entirely different dimension. Directed by Peter J. Hartstock for Fantasma House Productions, the visual draws inspiration from 1960s B-movies, spy noir and the campy humour of Austin Powers. Featuring Thoresen as two characters, Detective Wood and Agent Holly, it transforms the relationship’s emotional chaos into an exaggerated spy adventure. Its playful, queer aesthetic complements the song’s larger-than-life personality.

Originally from New Jersey, Thoresen developed her artistic foundation through musical theatre before studying acting in New York. She began writing songs at 19 and independently learned songwriting, production and mixing before relocating to Los Angeles at 21 to pursue music professionally.

Her sound now combines indie pop, alternative rock and R&B, shaped by theatrical influences and emotionally candid songwriting. Performances at venues including The Viper Room, Hotel Café, The Whisky A Go-Go and The Virgil have also helped establish her presence in the Los Angeles music scene.

With “Russian Roulette,” Thoresen offers more than a song about a destructive romance. She introduces an artistic world where vulnerability meets theatrical confidence, setting an intriguing direction for Hollywood Forever.
