Pairing sweeping strings with vulnerable vocals, this pop ballad is about the desire for connection and uncertainty about belonging. Titled ‘Spaceship’, the single gradually gathers force, with a rising arrangement, and is her fourth release of the year. Previewing Where Was I?, a third studio album which drops in November, ‘Spaceship’ is a glorious way to introduce the work.
Discussing the single, Mali explains:
“Spaceship is a love song for anyone who’s ever felt like a visitor in someone else’s world, close enough to see them clearly, but never quite brave enough to land. A song about wanting to connect while carrying the quiet belief that you don’t belong.”
Written after returning to Mumbai in 2022, the record explores identity and change with collaborator Keshav Dhar. An MTV Europe award winner, Mali has appeared in the BBC’s Rhythms of India, performed at SXSW and Lollapalooza India, and opened for Ed Sheeran and Foo Fighters.
