Eirik, the drummer here.
I’ve been fine — a little exhausted, but exhilarated after releasing and celebrating our new album with a small release tour over the last couple of weeks.
What can you tell us about the title and meaning behind your most recent release?
Ex Nihilo is a Latin phrase meaning “out of nothing,” and it refers to a new beginning for the band after a couple of troublesome post-pandemic years. Long story short: a new drummer brought new energy and motivation to continue making music.
How was the recording and writing process?
Typically, Anders (guitar) and Helge (bass) will bring in ideas they’ve come up with. The three of us then doodle around with them until we have some rough sketches. We’ll work on these individually before meeting up again to refine them into finished compositions.
Anders then records a demo with guitars accompanied by a sampled drum track. Vocals are added later. This demo becomes the foundation for our preparations before we enter the studio.
Our budget allowed us to spend three days in the studio, which meant everyone had to know their parts beforehand. There simply wasn’t any room for experimentation. To save time and money, Anders recorded all the vocals in his home studio.
Where do you guys find inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Life, personal experiences, and whatever happens to be going on in our heads. Sometimes it’s a riff, sometimes a feeling or a story. It can come from a movie, a book, or something happening in the news.
Will you be hitting the road this year?
We’ve just finished our release tour, and now we’re looking ahead to 2027. We already have a few gigs planned for the new year, and we’ve recently teamed up with a small booking agency. We’re hoping they’ll generate a shitload of new bookings for us.
What else is happening next in your world?
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be focusing on promoting the new album and hopefully reaching a lot of new listeners, promoters, and people who want us to come and play for them.
Then we’ll be back in the rehearsal room preparing for next year’s gigs. And who knows — maybe some new material will start materializing out of nothing.
