“Survivor” Faces Its Own Competition with Upcoming NBC Reality Series “Million Dollar Island”

There was a time when the CBS winner-takes-all reality show Survivor ruled the roost. Back in 2000 when the Charlie Parsons created show premiered there really was nothing comparable. That all changed naturally after this mere survival game show broke through into the mainstream and became a certifiable and stone cold smash hit. Suddenly, everywhere you looked there was a new and similar model riding into town to challenge the mettle of Jeff Probst and company: The Amazing Race, Love Island, The Circle, Tough As Nails, Alone and I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here all inundated television sets the world over with their own peculiar spin on Survivor. According to those Lord of the Flies enthusiasts over at The Hollywood Reporter, NBC feels as if there’s still gold to mine from them there hills as is evidenced by their greenlighting of the all-new adventure reality series Million Dollar Island.

Million Dollar Island is a Survivor-like reality series which sees a huge cast of one hundred contestants dropped off on a deserted island for fifty days, all of them competing for not only bragging rights in being the last player standing, but also as the winner of a cool million dollar grand prize. Let the games begin!

According to the publicity hounds at NBC, Million Dollar Island specifically shakes out like this: The one hundred contestants “must forge friendships and build alliances as they plot to stay on a remote desert island for up to fifty days and compete to win their share of the ultimate $1 million prize. Upon arrival, each contestant is given a bracelet worth $10,000. During their time on the island, contestants gain and lose bracelets through various challenges, but when a player leaves the island, they must choose who will receive their portion of the money. In this intense competition, the strength of your personal bonds are just as important as being the ultimate player.”

NBC’s maestro of alternative programming and development – executive Vice President Jenny Groom, said in a statement that the network was “excited to partner with a powerhouse team to bring this fresh and bold social experiment to NBC. This series is sure to entertain with ever-evolving alliances, trust, deceit and the ultimate will to survive.” Sounds vaguely like my families annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Based off of a Dutch formatted series that just wrapped its own first season, Million Dollar Island looks set to premiere on boob tubes worldwide later in 2022 or early ’23.
