Free Mace presents: “War Machine”

June 2021 – Free Mace’s outstanding studio single “War Machine” is one for the rebels and free thinkers. The band managed to capture the sound and feel of modern reggae with a bit of a classic touch by delivering a hard-hitting formula, which values great vocals, as well as great instrumental parts. The mix is balanced and direct. As a result, the sound of this release feels very accomplished, something that you would expect from some of the very best music makers globally.

The song kicks off with a more minimalistic introduction, with a rhythmic guitar “skunk” and vocals. The drums have a spectacular introduction, and when the full band kicks in, the guitar happens to gain a really cool echo effect, which adds a bit of a different rhythmic spin (to my ears, this sounds like an MXR carbon-copy type of sound, but I could be wrong, and it could be any bucket brigade analog delay – it does have that warm, classic sound!). The bass is fat and groovy, really giving the song so much movement. The vocals bring so much melody to the table, and the lyrics are conscious and thought-provoking. I particularly love the bride with the guitar solo, as it is very unexpected and it brings something different to the song arrangement! I really enjoy the power that it adds to this otherwise chill song!

Check out this band if you like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and The Specials – and in particular, you should definitely enjoy “War Machine” if you do like reggae music that’s got a very personal, rebellious and authentic feel. It’s always quite difficult to truly establish your own identity as a musician, especially if you are an upcoming band that’s often compared to more established acts. However, Free Mace managed to accomplish that to perfection.
