Multi-platinum, chart-topping, award-winning artist Lil Nas X has returned with his first single in a year and a half, the triumphant and deeply personal “World’s Greatest,” out today via Columbia Records.
Montero first announced the song with a personal message from his late mother, Tamikia Hill, to whom he dedicates the song and accompanying video. In a touching voicemail, she encourages her son to “walk by faith, not by sight,” to “never give up,” and reminds him that everything will work itself out. Alongside the message, Montero shared, “‘Walk by faith, not by sight’ was my mom’s favorite phrase to say. As I move through life it resonates more & more.”
The song finds Montero reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most recognizable artists in the world. Written entirely by Lil Nas X and produced by C.WRAY and Steve Rusch, “World’s Greatest” is both a celebration of how far he has come and a reminder to keep moving forward when the path gets difficult. The song moves between vulnerability and celebration, acknowledging the moments of sadness and defeat while ultimately landing on an undeniable declaration: “I’m a champion.”
The accompanying video, which was filmed in his hometown of Atlanta and directed by Phillip Youmans, brings that journey to life through a poignant meeting of Montero’s past and present. Memories of his childhood unfold alongside scenes of his present-day life, creating a visual conversation between the young boy who dreamed of more and the artist he has become. As the pressures of the present begin to take their toll, the past becomes a source of strength, culminating in a powerful reminder of the person at the heart of it all.
“World’s Greatest” marks Lil Nas X’s first release since March 2025 and arrives as a new chapter in the story of an artist who has continually challenged expectations, blurred cultural boundaries and reshaped the possibilities of modern pop stardom. From the record-breaking success of “Old Town Road” to MONTERO, his critically acclaimed debut album, and hits including “INDUSTRY BABY,” “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” and “THAT’S WHAT I WANT,” Lil Nas X has built a career defined by cultural impact, fearless self-expression and an ability to turn deeply personal experiences into moments that resonate around the world.
With “World’s Greatest,” Montero turns inward, looking back at the journey that brought him here while reminding himself and anyone listening to keep believing in what comes next.
