Rooted in a deep love for classic soul and R&B, Bonneville continue to lean into the warmth of vintage musicianship with their latest single ‘Fools In The Game’. Led by the creative pairing of Jeff Hayashi and Wes McGee, the group have steadily built a reputation for reviving the spirit of analogue era songwriting, drawing on Southern influences and anything they can find in their rich record collections, ranging from northern soul, to jazz and beyond.
Built around a tight rhythm section, cinematic guitar and basslines, ‘Fools In The Game’ lies deep in the pocket, drawing on a tint of a warm analogue nostalgia that feels just as inviting as it does illusive. Strings and backing vocals add a gentle lift to the arrangement, while the pair deliver a performance that favours restraint and sincerity, letting the song breathe as its story of love and vulnerability unfolds.
Diving in, the McGee explains, “I had been listening to a lot of Thee Sacred Souls and wanted that feel. It ended up landing outside of that, with a more straightforward bass groove and what feels to me like a late 1970s sound, similar to Andy Gibb’s ‘I Just Want to Be Your Everything’”, whilst Hayashi adds, “In my mind, the track and the hook naturally spoke for themselves. The guitar and bass line automatically intertwined and played off one another. The song has a natural counterpoint, both rhythmically and sonically.”
