Prithvi Chauhan: Cinematographer Turning Emotion into Image

Prithvi Chauhan has built his career around a simple but powerful idea: images can communicate what words often cannot. As a cinematographer, he is drawn to the emotional language of light, composition, and movement—tools that help transform a script into something audiences can feel as much as they watch. His work is rooted not just in technical precision, but in a genuine desire to create visuals that carry emotional weight and support the heart of a story.

His creative path was shaped early by a strong connection to visual art. While coming from a family of doctors gave him a clear example of one kind of professional life, it also helped him realize that his own calling lay elsewhere. During his bachelor’s in design in Italy, he began to more deeply understand and appreciate the power of art. Time spent in museums in Torino left a lasting mark on him, especially his encounters with the works of painters such as Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Sally Storch, and Robert Panitzsch. Their ability to express complex emotional states visually, often without explanation or dialogue, resonated deeply with him. That experience eventually led him toward cinematography.

Today, Prithvi Chauhan approaches cinematography as both an artistic and collaborative craft. A director of photography is responsible for translating a director’s vision into visual form, and Chauhan embraces that responsibility with care. His role spans the technical and creative sides of production, from designing lighting and framing shots to determining camera movement and shaping the overall visual mood of a film. For him, strong cinematography is never only about making something look beautiful—it is about making it meaningful.

One of the qualities that defines Chauhan’s approach is empathy. In an industry known for its intensity, long hours, and constant pressure, he places real value on creating a set environment where people feel seen, respected, and included. He understands that filmmaking is a team effort, and that great work often emerges from collaboration built on trust. By listening to the people around him and making space for their ideas, he helps foster a working culture where creativity can thrive. That spirit of openness not only strengthens the process, but often leads to better results on screen.

His creativity is also fueled by observation. Prithvi Chauhan finds inspiration in everyday life, especially in the way light interacts with materials and spaces in the world around him. He is attentive to subtle visual moments that others might overlook, and that awareness informs the texture and mood of his work. At the same time, he sees limitations not as setbacks but as opportunities. Budget restrictions, time pressure, and technical constraints can force unexpected solutions, and he has learned to use those challenges as catalysts for innovation rather than obstacles to expression.

Expanding his horizons, Prithvi has recently started pursuing underwater cinematography, having successfully cleared the Open Water Diver course and preparing to commence the Advanced Open Water Diver course soon. This new pursuit allows him to explore entirely different environments and lighting dynamics, adding another layer to his visual storytelling.

In addition, he shot a project in the Netherlands last year, which is set to enter Tier 1 and Tier 2 film festivals this year. This international experience reflects his growing versatility and the recognition his work is gaining across global platforms.

Like many artists working in image-making today, Chauhan is also navigating an industry shaped by rapid technological change. With camera systems, lighting tools, and software constantly evolving, staying current requires ongoing learning and adaptation. Rather than resisting that pace, he views it as part of the job—an essential way to remain equipped to serve each project’s visual needs. For Chauhan, technology matters most when it supports the story, never when it distracts from it.

Patience, work ethic, and communication remain central to the way he works. These qualities, combined with his visual sensitivity and collaborative mindset, continue to shape his growing career. As he moves forward, Prithvi Chauhan stands out as a cinematographer committed not only to crafting striking images, but to creating work that feels human, thoughtful, and emotionally true.
