“I’ve battled depression my whole life,” shares lead singer Jacob. Having to take an SSRI (like Celexa) every day to be fully functional spurns my pride, but the benefits outweigh any embarrassment by leaps and bounds. I would love to see the stigmas and misunderstandings surrounding the disease lift, especially given their application to musicians and other artists. It’s by the grace of modern medicine that I’m around to make music in the first place.”
The song explores what it means to see life clearly after years of distortion, what is described as a “kaleidoscope” warping everything, but himself. This leads to a perspective shift that came from taking medication after trying everything else in search of release: meditation, exercise, journaling, therapy, herbal remedies.
Midway through the track, everything drops out except piano and bass, a studio decision suggested by drummer and Jacob’s best friend Tyler, creating a moment of stark reset before the song swells again with Pablo’s layered background vocals. The effect is intimate and cinematic, capturing both vulnerability and resilience in real time.
