Technology advancements, changing demands, and a growing emphasis on efficiency
and sustainability are driving a significant transformation in the construction industry.
As a result, a seamless, turnkey process that encompasses everything from design and implementation to operation and maintenance depends heavily on mechanical engineering in this evolving landscape.
Mechanical engineers are at the forefront of transforming the construction industry by leveraging their systems integration, project management, and innovation expertise.
One of the primary contributions of mechanical engineering in the construction process is integrating various building systems.
Youssef Aoun, who is a leading mechanical engineer with Roeslein & Associates, says he and his peers now employ a holistic approach to projects: “We work closely with architects, electrical engineers, and other professionals to ensure that all systems, including HVAC, the industrial process, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical, are seamlessly integrated into the building design.”
Aoun commenced his mechanical engineering training in Dubai, UAE. Here, he started working on the steel structure of high-rise buildings.
Additionally, he has worked with Ball, one of the world’s most well-known home canning suppliers. His work has contributed to installing facilities for the company’s plants in Colorado, California, Arizona, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, China, the Middle East, and Africa.
While at the forefront of his field, Aoun has dealt with several difficult situations. A solution he came up with once prevented an acid leak that would have been detrimental to production.
Aoun believes a holistic approach ensures the different systems work harmoniously: “We can optimize energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and overall functionality. By overseeing the integration process, we ensure that the building operates as a cohesive unit, enhancing the efficiency and performance of the structure.”
Mechanical engineers also play a crucial role in project management throughout the construction process. They collaborate with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Aoun says: “Mechanical engineers develop comprehensive project schedules, manage resources, and monitor progress to ensure that all mechanical systems are installed and commissioned according to the project timeline.
“By utilising project management principles, mechanical engineers facilitate effective communication, mitigate risks, and ensure the successful execution of construction Projects.”
Furthermore, mechanical engineers contribute to innovation and technological advancements in the construction industry. With the rapid development of new materials, construction techniques, and smart technologies, mechanical engineers are pivotal in incorporating these innovations into building designs.
For example, they leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to create smart buildings with integrated sensors and controls that optimize energy consumption, monitor equipment performance, and enhance occupant comfort.
Mechanical engineers also explore renewable energy solutions, such as solar panels and geothermal systems, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainability in construction projects.
By monitoring energy consumption, analysing data, and identifying areas for improvement, mechanical engineers help to build owners and facility managers optimize energy efficiency and reduce operating costs.
They also play a critical role in ensuring that buildings comply with safety regulations and environmental standards, providing occupants with a safe and healthy environment.
Aoun says: “The role of mechanical engineering in transforming the construction industry extends beyond individual projects. We actively participate in research and development to advance construction practices and explore new possibilities.”
He adds: “I am passionate about helping a customer overcome any challenges they may have with what they installed, whether it’s not running properly, having leaks, or any kind of problem.
“It can be very stressful from a safety, financial, and productivity perspective. I spend time reassuring them and helping them resolve the issue immediately. My main priority is always to solve the problem. And I endeavor to get that done on schedule.”
He adds: “It is essential to foster close customer relationships so you can understand exactly what people want from their systems. Only then can you develop engineering, enabling them to maximise their production and profits.
Aoun is incredibly passionate about technology and how to implement it to create the best systems available today: “I’m always interested in developing new things, new ideas, and using the newest technology to make improvements,” he says.
“Like many of my colleagues, I engage in continuing education and professional development to stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and regulations, ensuring their expertise remains relevant in an ever-evolving industry.”
As a result, Aoun has mentored hundreds of professionals in the field and says it is a way of helping him realise more innovative methods and ideas: “I believe we can only grow and get better if we learn from one another.
”Professor Charbel Bou-Mosleh, the Chairperson of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Notre Dame University Lebanon, has witnessed Aoun’s mentoring first-hand.
He says: “Youssef is very generous and giving when educating other students. He also works incredibly hard in whatever he does. His leadership and communication skills are remarkable. Some of the best I have ever seen at the university. He has incredibly good ethics and treats everyone with respect.”
Professor Bou-Mosleh adds: “He is not afraid of challenges and embraces them without complaint. He has such a wealth of knowledge and expertise in his field.”
Khalil Nasser, CEO and President of Revision Management Consulting and Technology Systems, knows Aoun as a mentor.
He says: “Youssef is very quick, very intelligent, very knowledgeable, and his drive is incredible. He’s also ethical, gets things done and gets them done quickly. He works incredibly cost-effectively, coming up with efficient solutions. His creative and innovative discoveries have greatly impacted mechanical engineering.”
Al Wallace, the President of the Energy Environmental Corporation, has known and worked with Aoun for 10 years.
He says: “Youssef is tenacious at producing results and a competent engineer. He has significant overseas experience as an engineer and project manager, and is a fast learner and always attempts to find creative solutions to established problems.”
