INTERVIEW: Fonzy & Company

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Can’t complain. We are just happy to be out and about. Now the sun’s about it’s getting more tense in the day jobs – that’s the job you have when your band sucks.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Kids Stay Home”?

Fonzy has always been a stickler for not following ‘authority’ figures as a kid, which we all have experience with. Reel Big Fish had a song ‘The Kids Don’t Like it’, The Offspring had a track ‘The Kids Aren’t Alright’ and The Who had a little number called ‘The Kids Are Alright’ – this pays homage to that. All of these reflect the youth of their generation and this reflects the youth of ours when we were kids growing up, being angry at bosses, teachers etc and using music to drive that. We’re all old now.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It’s little snippets growing up that has inspired the track. If you’ve ever had a drunk ass boss, if you’ve ever been belittled by someone who is supposed to ‘know better’ or even lost your faith in the system, this song is for you.

The single comes off your new EP Touche – what’s the story behind the title?

Touché is to highlight a good point or a clever observation. The record is an observation in society where a large majority will ever say that word. Everyone has an opinion but it’s a rarity especially in the world online to just admit someone else is correct. It’s instead a false reality that a lot of people live in belief and can never learn and grow. That, and it’s just a sexy word y’know?

How was the recording and writing process?

Awesome really. We worked with Sam and Joe of Innersound Audio in York, so Hella travel from Bristol back and forth especially for drummer Sam Bennett who did it twice.

Writing took a little longer, it’s weird how many half ideas the band have thrown away over time. The track No Way (Man You’re Old) was written in literally a few hours, sometimes the stars align and we are all happy. Fonzy wrote the initial ideas and were developed them together which has been the band’s groove. Each add their own unique elements and it’s what made this record shine.

What role does Bristol play in your music?

It’s a breeding ground for great music. Only one of the group is actually from here but it’s one of those places you’ll more than likely run into the same people again and again if you run in the circles of rock and it’s sub genres.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The Front Bottoms did play a big part in this lyrical style. The lyrics in Fonzy songs are very opaque which is intentional for the listener to find their own meaning within the track. TKSH is in 6/4 so it was crazy fun not doing the generic 4/4 for a change until the chorus. The original lyrics were going to be our first censored track, however after rewriting, it was the better choice. We wanted to portray innocence almost and that wouldn’t have come across as well.

What else is happening next in Fonzy and Company’s world?

F&C will be touring all over the UK this year. Fonzy and Company Podcast as well as some new live sessions and all that jazz. Check out – https://linktr.ee/fonzyandcoband
