Penfriend has announced the release of new single ‘The Only Way Out Is Through’.
Penfriend is the new project from Bristol solo artist Laura Kidd. Arriving with arms outstretched in the midst of a crisis, Penfriend offers meaningful connection in a time of global uncertainty. ‘The Only Way Out Is Through’arrives on a wave of icy synths and 90’s guitar crunch with a message of hope and determination that we all need after a tough six months.
Laura says “I can’t do much of anything when I’m feeling down, let alone write a song about it, but one day in 2019 when I was trudging my way back, I made an attempt to leave a breadcrumb trail for my future self.
“This song is my attempt to trap the “shapeless forces” that “pull at me”, making them solid by assigning words to them, reducing their power and size to something I might feasibly be able to overcome.”
‘The Only Way Out Is Through’ follows the release of debut single ‘Everything Looks Normal In The Sunshine’, an explosive sugarbuzz pop banger recalling the heady strut of Dream Wife and Dinosaur Pile-Up whilst nodding quietly to Blue Album-era Weezer.
Series Two of Laura’s conversational podcast Attention Engineer will launch on Wednesday 7th October with another great lineup of guests. Acclaimed by The Observer / Guardian Online as “a lovely listen…” [Kidd] “talks with insight and warmth”, fellow artists featured so far include Belly’s Tanya Donelly, Frank Turner, comedian Bec Hill, Charlotte Hatherley, Public Service Broadcasting, Tom Robinson and Nova Twins and the show shot to #10 in the Apple Podcasts top music shows on launch.
Attention Engineers are digital specialists hired by big tech companies to keep us glued to our screens for as much of the day as possible. Where the podcast explores creativity, mental health and determination, Penfriend’s upcoming debut album will share her own complicated journey through the digital maze.
Laura concludes, “The choice to release music in a universally dark time isn’t one I take lightly. ‘The Only Way Out Is Through’ is the most resonant and useful song I have to offer right now, a rescue raft for whoever needs one. That’s what this song is for me.”
