I’m happy to be in the ‘90s in this look back at television history. Today I’m tackling 1995. This is a pre-internet (for all intents and purposes) world devoid of streaming. You watched things when they aired. However, by 1995 cable was already rampant. It was a golden era for TV. But was 1995 a momentous year for television? What shows debuted or ended their run? Let’s take a look!
Wait, the sitcom Cybill, starring Cybill Shepherd, didn’t debut until 1995? I would have sworn it was a show from like 1992 or so. Christine Baranski won an Emmy for that show, which I have admittedly never seen. If I were to watch a Shepherd show, it would be Moonlighting. Also, 1995 was when The Office debuted. Let me explain, there was a sitcom called The Office that starred Valerie Harper and only lasted five episodes.
A couple big sitcoms debuted in 1995, though neither has really risen to the level of an all-time classic. One is a beloved but undervalued sitcom, and the other is solid but was the more popular of these two shows. The sitcoms in question are NewsRadio and The Drew Carey Show. I watched the latter back then, but only got around to NewsRadio after it entered syndication. Perhaps the most notable show to debut is in fact Monday Night Nitro. That created the “Monday Night Wars” in professional wrestling. Hey, if you were a kid in the ‘90s that was big. The first episode also was the debut of Hulk Hogan’s Pastamania! That restaurant was insane!

We also lost shows from my childhood in 1995, including Eureeka’s Castle, Ren & Stimpy, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. There aren’t any notable series finales from 1995, though. Full House did end that year, and so did Northern Exposure, but iconic finales are missing.
I feel like, all in all, 1995 was a big year for television, mostly on the debut side. I didn’t even get into some of the sports shows that debuted. Hell, the entire History Channel was launched! As a huge Simpsons fan, this was also a notable year for the fact that “Who Shot Mr. Burn Part 2” aired. Turns out the baby did it. If I was Troy McClure, this is where I would cough.
