Cannes, Cattle, and the SpaceX IPO: Catching Up with Sean Finn

Sean Finn is a hard guy to pin down. The Houston-based investor and Finn & Company founder has spent the last fifteen years building a portfolio that runs from SpaceX and X-energy to prediction markets, a longevity clinic, and a 250-acre cattle ranch outside Houston. He’s recently been pitched a package of new Eli Roth films, and this year alone he’s hopping from Cannes to the Olympics in Italy to a courtside seat at the Lakers — with a Venezuela oil trip somewhere in between. We caught up with him on what he’s actually been up to.

What’s the best afterparty you’ve been to in the last year that people wouldn’t expect?

Best afterparty was in Palm Beach at Carriage House. We had spent the night at a Mar-a-Lago event with the President in attendance, then went over to Carriage House for the afterparty and ended up having conversations with Bret Baier. The funny part was waking up the next morning, turning on the TV, and seeing Bret talking about the invasion of Iran. Just one of those surreal nights.

What are you seeing the most opportunity right now?

Most opportunity right now is in investments. I’ve been focused on areas like Polymarket and prediction markets more broadly. I was an early investor in SpaceX in early 2020, and we’re starting to see that come to fruition with the IPO this year. I’m also involved with X-energy, the nuclear project tied in with Amazon. A lot of interesting movement happening across those sectors.

Are you looking more at building new ventures right now, or backing existing ones?

New ventures. I’m working on an AI project in the oil industry right now and just got back from a meeting in Beverly Hills on it.

Are you someone who plans your nights in advance, or just sees where it goes?

I’m very go-with-the-flow. It probably drives people around me a little crazy because my plans are always changing, but that’s just how I operate.

What’s something people misunderstand about your lifestyle?

People think it’s all late nights, but I don’t sleep much and I actually like getting up early. Even if I’m out at events most evenings, I’m still up early the next day.

Outside of business, what’s been holding your attention lately?

The N** playoffs. I’ve been following closely, especially the Lakers. I’ve spent some time courtside and had a chance to be on the court with Luka Doncic, which was a great experience.

What’s your current guilty pleasure that people wouldn’t guess?

Ice cream. I’ve never passed a Dairy Queen I didn’t stop at.

What’s something new in your world right now?

I just bought a 250-acre ranch outside of Houston. We’ve got over 100 head of cattle now, and I’m getting into breeding bulls and training rodeo bulls. It’s a completely new space for me, but something I’ve been enjoying. That said, you’re not going to catch me out there full-time.

Tequila still the move, or has that changed?

Always tequila and Sprite!

You travel constantly — what’s one thing you always bring with you no matter where you’re going?

Phone charger. Never leave home without it.

What’s your strategy for navigating a packed event week without burning out?

I’ve been doing young plasma — it’s a newer anti-aging treatment that’s been a game-changer for keeping my energy up through long stretches of events and travel.

What’s your go-to way to reset after a nonstop stretch of events?

Three-mile run and a couple laps in the swimming pool.

What’s one city that still excites you every time you land?

New York City. Always.

What’s the one hotel you always come back to?

The Aman, New York City.

If you have a free afternoon in LA, how are you actually spending it?

Lunch at Il Pastaio.

What’s your go-to dinner?

Steak and desert.

You’re heading to Cannes again this year — what does that week actually look like for you behind the scenes?

I’ll be spending about two weeks at Hotel du Cap. Lots of socializing and events — it’s one of those weeks where the rooms matter as much as the schedule.

What kind of projects are you looking to align with right now in film or media?

I’m exploring investing in a few of Eli Roth’s projects — Ice Cream Man, the recreation of Cliffhanger, and Dead Man’s Wire. Met some of those guys at a Cannes party last year and we’ve stayed in touch.

Are there any new partnerships or collaborations coming up that you’re excited about?

I just opened a new longevity clinic in Houston. It’s an area a lot of people are moving into right now, and it’s been a space I’ve wanted to get into for a while.

What’s next for you this year that people aren’t seeing yet?

Venezuela — I’ve got an oil-business trip coming up.

What’s something fun you’re looking forward to that has nothing to do with business?

I went to the Olympics in Italy this year. Got to see the men’s ice hockey — a family member was officiating the games, which made it even more special.
