Today, Cardboard Sessions presents Owen Barry as he becomes the first artist to take on one of the most ambitious Cardboard Chaos builds ever made – the fully playable, archtop hollow-body acoustic guitar made out of cardboard. The latest collab with Ernest Packaging illustrates what happens when tone meets craft and chaos meets cardboard.
Recorded at High Bias Studios in downtown Detroit, Barry plugs in and the cardboard comes alive. This isn’t just a performance, it’s a statement.
“It’s way cooler than I expected. I mean, listen to that thing just acoustically…it just chimes! Sick pickup…there’s so much range in this pickup, you can really hear the guitar.” – Owen Barry
The acoustic cardboard guitar recently joined the lineup of cardboard-crafted instruments that include a Fender Stratocaster, Master of Maple drums, a keyboard and more. It started in the innovation lab in Southern California at Ernest Packaging with Mike Martinez and his team. Carving archtops, backs, slides, and multiple necks make out of poly and paper. Mike had to stay open to everything and push the cardboard to its absolute limit so he could trade fours and eights with the next genius on stage all the way across the country: Gabriel Currie.
Currie, founder, and owner of Echopark Guitars in Detroit, Michigan has made guitars for some of the greatest in rock and roll including Steven Tyler and Josh Homme. But when it came to making a Benedetto-inspired acoustic, he had to take a break to collect his thoughts. But when he returned to his workshop – his personal stage – he was on fire.
