1.) We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed and enigmatic metalcore artist OBELISK; greetings and salutations OBELISK and thank you for taking time from a very busy schedule to speak with us and our ever-inquisitive readers here at Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the mosh-pit, how is 2025 finding you and yours?
Thank you very much for the great intro and honoured to be taking part! 2025 has been great, busy and stressful, but massively great!
2.) Major kudos and accolades on your eagerly-anticipated and freshly minted new single Working Class Zero which is set to light up record charts across the ever-loving globe when it premieres this October 10! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired this stunner of a single?
Thank you! This song is written about the earth disparity we’re suffering from now. And a few lines in there about how insulting the elite can be when mentioning the working class. Then it dips into the deprived emotions I feel about these people and I think the sentiment is shared! So I’m hoping everyone can get behind!
3.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates Working Class Zero from the Distinguished Competition on the current day music scene?
I think the lyrical content goes a bit deeper into how I/people feel about this situation than others that may play it safe! And production wise it sounds a bit more plucky and warm. Typically you hear Metalcore music and it’s produced to an ear perfect point. I feel this album has a bit more heart to it, but still sounds great!
4.) You’re widely recognized and celebrated for your own producing skills. Is it a safe bet that you did the producing honours on Working Class Zero? And, if so, what do you feel the pros are to acting as your own producer?
Yes, the entire project from concept to delivery is myself. The pros are definitely that everything falls to me, and it can be super quick to change something. It’s a bit time consuming having to play every part and of course writing everything but I definitely loved the experience! I did opt out of mixing and mastering and passed that up to my lovely engineer!
5.) Working Class Zero is but the opening volley towards what is set to be the debut of your freshman album Brushed By Darkness which is set to drop this December 12; major congratulations! We touched upon inspirations for one tune in an above question. This begs the question: What inspired this full-fledged debut LP?
So the whole project is a reaction at how unsupportive Scot’s/Brits can be. I’ve played in bands for years, good and bad bands, and even in my good bands I could get people to be interested. I’ve always wanted to do an album completely by myself as a multi-instrumentalist, and this resentment sparked me into this project! The album tackles a lot of issues personally like dealing with a narcissist partner and then all the way to dealing with an autism diagnosis late in life!
6.) In the wake of the October 10 release of your new single Working Class Zero and preceding the December 12 premiere of your debut album Brushed By Darkness, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?
I’m still trying to figure that out! It’s a part of the project, I wanted to build a following and play sold out shows in smaller venues instead of empty pubs!
7.) Speaking of live performances, what can fans who haven’t yet seen you perform live expect and look forward to when attending a show which you’re on? How do you translate your dynamic sounds from vinyl to the stage?
A puzzle to figure out! But what people could expect would be a band on stage and plenty of energy. I’m a very emotive performer and want the crowd to almost feel what I’m feeling.
8.) Who are some of the people who have informed and inspired your own pathway?
I can’t name too many people because I have an identity to hide . But as of recently, on a grander scale, Seep Token have been a huge influence to me!
9.) How is Working Class Zero similar to some of your past music such as Stardust Cycle? How is it different?
I feel Working Class Zero is a better put together song, stardust was the first song I wrote for the album and definitely has a parts that I could have done better with. Think they still both have a high energy and really really get after you, being the heavier tracks on the album!
10.) Any final thoughts you might like to share with fans and readers regarding your upcoming single Working Class Zero, as well as your debut LP Brushed By Darkness?
I’m just grateful for the opportunity to do this and incredibly happy with my fans all over! It’s already been an incredible journey and I can’t wait to share this album with you all!
