If AI is a mind, the sensorium is its set of senses—the engineered layer where raw signals become observations a system can actually reason about. It decides what counts as a “notice,” how trustworthy that notice is, and how its provenance travels into decisions. Get the sensorium wrong and even brilliant models act like confident sleepwalkers. Get it right and reasoning, safety, and accountability all get easier.
Researcher and consultant Simon Muflier (The Oyez) argues that the field’s next leap won’t be a bigger model so much as a better perception contract. “Most ‘explainability’ failures are really perception failures,” he says. “If you can’t show what the system believed at the moment of decision—and why—everything downstream is guesswork.”
So what is a sensorium in practice? Think five responsibilities:
- Acquisition & normalization across modalities (text, images, audio, logs), shaping signals into consistent, timestamped events.
- Validation & provenance that attaches source reputation, dedupes contradictions, and fingerprints content.
- Semantic enrichment—entities, events, relations—so reasoning happens over meaningful objects, not loose tokens.
- Capability routing that sends observations to the right specialists (retrievers, planners, verifiers) based on task and risk.
- Feedback & drift control to watch data quality and fold human review back into perception.
For policymakers, Muflier’s advice is to regulate perception obligations, not vague “AI principles.” Require agencies and vendors to: (a) preserve input provenance; (b) maintain an observation log tying outputs to specific sources with confidence scores; and (c) support replayability, so an auditor can reconstruct what the system “saw.” “Don’t outlaw model weights you can’t inspect—mandate the trails you can,” he says. That shift enables proportionate oversight: light-touch for low-risk workflows; stricter logs and human checkpoints where rights or safety are at stake.

For business leaders, his counsel is equally pragmatic:
- Start with one consequential workflow and instrument the perception boundary. Measure three SLIs: provenance coverage (what % of answers cite verifiable observations), duplicate suppression (how often you collapse the same fact), and time-to-explanation (how fast an operator can reconstruct a decision).
- Adopt typed observations (e.g., Observation{entity, relation, source, confidence, hash}) and keep the schema small enough for non-experts to read. “If your observation format needs a decoder ring, it will rot on the shelf,” Muflier warns.
- Push assurance to the edge: hash content on ingestion, corroborate across sources, quarantine ambiguities.
- Federate, don’t centralize blindly: allow domain-specific sensoriums that interoperate through shared contracts, the way teams share API standards but own their services.
This is not a call for baroque taxonomies. It’s a call for disciplined perception. Treat sensoriums like SRE treats latency: pick SLIs, define error budgets, and learn from incidents. Red teams should attack perception directly—sensor spoofing, ontology poisoning, time-skewed feeds—because that’s where brittle beliefs begin.
Muflier’s bottom line is refreshingly human: “A good sensorium widens judgment. It surfaces dissenting evidence, carries uncertainty forward, and makes disagreement inspectable.” In a world racing to automate answers, that might be the most engaging promise of all: building systems that first learn to see well, so we can decide well.
