Have they done an episode of The Simpsons called something akin to “Krusty Gets Kancelled” using the modern parlance of “canceled?” Well, the season-four finale is talking about Krusty the Clown’s TV show, and this is definitely a season finale. It pulls out all the stops. That’s cool. It’s also a quite good episode that is far from remarkable.
Gabbo becomes TV’s biggest thing. He’s a dummy. Like, a ventriloquist dummy. He becomes so popular that Krusty’s ratings tank and his show is canceled. This leads Bart and Lisa to jump in to help him do his Elvis-style comeback special. This is where the stops are all pulled out. Johnny Carson, Hugh Hefner, Bette Midler, Luke Perry, Barry White, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and even Elizabeth Taylor show up. They all play themselves, and most of them appear on Krusty’s special. The special gets Krusty back on TV, of course.
Of course, serving all these guest stars, famous people and entertainment professionals all, takes up much of the episodes and pulls it in different directions. They wanted to do the “Homer at the Bat” thing again, but that one made a lot more sense, and that episode is more effective. Also, it’s funnier.
“Krusty Gets Kancelled” does feel like a proper season finale, though, and that’s cool. It has some good jokes and fun cultural references. Having Johnny Carson show up and Flea yell “Hey Moe!” is fun. This was the end of Mike Reiss and Al Jean’s era running The Simpsons. They were off to make The Critic. The show would change once more, but for the better? TBD. I mean, I know. I’m just waiting until next time around to get into it.
