The Kansas City Chiefs will not win the 2025 NFL title. We know this because the Chiefs won’t even make the playoffs. Not that football fans outside of Kansas City will lament the plight of the Chiefs. In the era of Andy Reid as head coach and Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls and played in five. This is a dynasty…but will Kansas City be adding to said dynasty? Let us consider the potential that the Chiefs have for more titles.
Now, in the biggest of pictures, the Chiefs are likely to win another title. The question is if they win another title during the Reid/Mahomes era, or even in the Mahomes and whoever follows Reid’s footsteps era. That’s a question mark, as Reid is 67, and he hasn’t shown a proclivity for generating assistants and coordinators who are viable head coaches. If Reid retires in two or three seasons, could Kansas City bounce back and win without him? It’s possible, but that’s a bit question mark.
Mahomes is only 30, and quarterbacks play for a long time these days. There’s also no real reason for him to leave Kansas City, given that he already has rings. Of course, that didn’t stop Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, or Brett Favre. Maybe that does mean there is a shelf life on Mahomes’ time with the Chiefs. Also, while quarterbacks have lengthy primes, we’re probably looking at a half-dozen more stabs at winning a Super Bowl for the Chiefs with Mahomes as a driving force for their success.
Travis Kelce will be retiring soon, Chris Jones likely will follow shortly thereafter, and those losses will be felt. The Chiefs have not drafted terribly well, leaving them with less depth of talent. They can still be good enough to win a Super Bowl, but the days of them being the favorite are over.
The Patriots and Broncos have young quarterbacks, good head coaches, and depth of talent. While Denver’s Bo Nix is maybe more of a game manager, Drake Maye looks like a future NFL MVP. Maybe Houston builds up enough talent around CJ Stroud. Buffalo will have a chance as long as Josh Allen is in his prime. For the next five years, it’s hard to see the Chiefs being the AFC favorite, and then you have to consider NFC teams like the Bears, the Packers, and the Eagles. Sean McVay with the Rams and Kyle Shanahan with the 49ers are hard to count out as well.
Kansas City has had a dynasty. However, it’s also possible, maybe even probable, the dynasty is over. We may have seen Andy Reid coaching Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl for the last time.
