Ramsey Elkholy on the Rise of the Indietronica Collective in the Modern Era

In March 2024, Monotronic stepped into the Los Angeles spotlight with their debut performance in the city, headlining at MUSEXPO in Burbank. The long-running industry gathering attracts label executives, publishers, managers, and media figures, making it a high-stakes environment for any emerging act.

Against a backdrop often dominated by industry formalities and self-appointed tastemakers, Monotronic’s set stood apart—direct, fully realized, and difficult to ignore.

That momentum carried forward quickly. The band followed up with local performances at The Viper Room and two shows at The Troubadour.

A Defining Moment for “Waiting for You

For a relatively new presence in Los Angeles, Monotronic’s trajectory has been unusually rapid, reflecting both audience traction and industry awareness.

After building an international profile, capturing attention across the music business, and with multiple singles reaching the number one spot on VEVO, “Waiting for You” represents a key moment in the band’s evolution. The record reflects a balance between experimentation and clarity, with its stylistic ambition strengthened by founder and leader Ramsey Elkholy’s focused artistic identity.

It is within that balance that the music finds its impact. The album isn’t a mere collection of songs. Rather, it is a cohesive listening experience that resonates beyond first impressions, becoming more rewarding with repeated listens.

Expanding the Monotronic Aesthetic

Monotronic continues to refine a sound that merges indie rock, pop, and indietronica with global influences. Under Ramsey Elkholy’s direction, the project has extended beyond audio into a broader visual experience, with each release paired with a distinct cinematic persona.

Recent videos for “Everything Moves”, “Looking Away”, and “Kettle Song (Yama Yama)” illustrate that approach. Each operates as a self-contained visual concept, reinforcing the music’s tonal direction while expanding its narrative reach.

The video for “Everything Moves” unfolds as a surreal sequence, blending urban imagery with stark palettes of black, white, and red. Visual motifs such as stylized playing cards introduce a symbolic layer, reinforcing themes of time, consequence, and internal conflict. The narrative explores the tension between escape and reconciliation, capturing a psychological struggle shaped by memory, regret, and the search for resolution.

Kettle Song (Yama Yama)” similarly leans into a more experimental visual identity. Drawing from Elkholy’s experiences in places like Sumatra and India, the track’s organic rhythms are mirrored in a psychedelic video style, complete with K-pop dancers, mermaids and Samurai warriors. Retro elements collide with saturated colors and visual distortions, creating a disorienting, immersive effect. The result is a sensory-driven piece that amplifies the song’s introspective tone.

Release and Production as a Reflection of Monotronic’s Methodology

The band’s production timeline has been deliberately fluid. Recording, mixing, and video production have taken place simultaneously, pushing the release of “Waiting for You” into early 2026. Rather than delay all material, the band opted to release an interim EP.

As Elkholy explained, the EP serves as a preview of the larger project. It includes four tracks: the first three drawn directly from the album’s opening sequence, and a final track—a TameImpala-inspired cover of Tears for Fears—to close out the listening experience.

This staggered rollout reflects the band’s broader iterative and detail-oriented methodology. Further, it reinforces the group’s commitment to aligning both sound and visuals before presenting the complete work.
