LIVERPOOL-BASED SONGWRITER, TERRY VENOMOUS RELEASES BRAND NEW VIPERS EP

When the world is going through dark times, artists often find themselves driven to reflect that darkness in their work. As the early 21st century grinds along musicians in particular are finding that their art is the best way they can push back.

One such artist is Terry Venomous, a Liverpool based post-punk songwriter whose new release, the ‘Send It Back!’ EP finds them reacting to the grim state of the world. A former member of Trudy and the Romance, Terry’s sound mixes the urban guitar folk of Kid Krule, with the wit and sardonic humour of The Fall.

Following on from his debut EP, ‘TV Reboot’, ‘Send It Back!’ is a rawer sounding effort, with Terry intentionally trying to invoke the energy of his live performances on record as he collaborated with numerous other Liverpool based musicians. Lyrically the songs were inspired by Terry’s rage at the state of the world from hours spent doom scrolling.

Nowhere is this more evident than on lead track, ‘Guernica Curtains’. Named for the famous anti-war painting by Picasso, the songs takes inspiration from a particularly shady moment in its history from the early 00s.

“The painting, that shows the horrors of a bombing campaign during the Spanish Civil War, was on display at the United Nations in New York in the 00s” Terry explains. “However, it was conveniently covered up during a press conference about the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. This smoke and mirrors routine has persisted till today, so the sentiment of the tune is really “we’re not that daft lads!”

Terry’s desire to collaborate more on this EP has led him to create a new “band”, Vipers, consisting of himself and any number of his musical accomplices (shades of Mark E. Smith there). Among those playing on the record are fellow members of the Liverpool scene, Todd Modern and two blinks, i love you.
