Rodeo Roots and Rock-Driven Country: Breaking Eight Unleashes the Spirit of the Arena on 8 Second Strong

When the arena gates swing open in rodeo, eight seconds is all it takes to define courage, grit, and survival. That same high-stakes energy fuels 8 Second Strong, the album from rising rodeo country band Breaking Eight.

Led by former professional bull rider Beni Paulson, Breaking Eight has built its identity around a rare authenticity in modern country music. Their sound is not just inspired by Western culture. It is lived. With 8 Second Strong, the band channels the adrenaline, danger, and triumph of rodeo life into a project that blends high-energy country rock with reflective storytelling.

For Paulson, the title of the album carries real meaning. In bull riding, eight seconds represent the difference between victory and defeat. It is a moment where preparation, instinct, and sheer willpower collide. That mentality runs through every track on the album, shaping songs that celebrate resilience, determination, and the raw emotional highs and lows that come with chasing big dreams.

“Breaking Eight goals include making great music that’s fun and edgy while telling a story and hopefully inspiring positivity,” Paulson explains. “8 Second Strong checks those boxes and then some. ‘Into the Unknown’ is a fun musical story song, while ‘What Can I Say’ is a patriotic ballad, and of course, a bunch of rodeo rock songs in between. I’m so proud of this album and even more excited to perform it and live it.”

Musically, the project balances arena-ready energy with moments of introspection. Electric guitars drive the band’s signature rodeo rock sound, while thoughtful lyrics ground the music in real experiences drawn from the Western lifestyle. From spirited anthems built for live crowds to reflective ballads that highlight the emotional weight behind the cowboy image, 8 Second Strong showcases the band’s evolving artistry while staying true to its roots.

Paulson’s journey to music is as compelling as the songs themselves. Raised on a ranch in Dunn County, North Dakota, he was introduced to bull riding at a young age. What began with riding calves soon progressed to steers, cows, and eventually bulls. Over the course of a 15-year career, Paulson competed at the highest level of the sport, qualifying for the Professional Bull Riders World Finals and becoming the first rider from North Dakota to reach that milestone.

After conquering the rodeo arena, Paulson turned his focus fully to music, drawing on a lifelong connection to songwriting and performance nurtured within his family. Following years of performing in North Dakota bands, he ultimately found his creative home with Breaking Eight, where he serves as lead singer and bassist.

With 8 Second Strong, Breaking Eight offers more than a collection of songs. It delivers a soundtrack shaped by experience, risk, and the unwavering spirit of the American West. Much like the sport that inspired it, the album captures the beauty of living boldly, knowing that sometimes the most meaningful moments in life last only eight seconds — but the story they leave behind can last forever.
