From Spain to New York: RenderTattoo Artist Selling Out At Major Tattoo Conventions

Angel “RenderTattoo” Nunes Lazaro is a New York-based tattoo artist who brings a touch of Spanish artistic flair to his black and white tattoo work.

Lazaro’s name is synonymous with precision and artistry in the tattoo world, and has carved out a reputation as a leading specialist in black and gray realism and blackwork. With a decade of experience and a career spanning Spain, the U.S., and the Netherlands, Render’s work—marked by its bold contrasts, intricate detailing, and signature drag-style dotwork—has captivated global audiences. His recent participation in high-profile tattoo conventions has further cemented his status as a rising star in the industry.

Making A Mark at Top Tattoo Conventions

RenderTattoo has inked at some of the most prestigious tattoo conventions worldwide. In 2022, he showcased his talent at the New York Tattoo Convention, where only 300 select artists competed for over 5,000 attendees over three days. He also participated in the NY Empire State Tattoo Expo, which drew 7,000 visitors to a jam-packed event featuring 500 artists.

In his home country of Spain, he has made a significant impact at local tattoo conventions like the VII ExpoTattoo Eestepona, Granada Tattoo Expo, and the II Almeria Tattoo Convention, where he consistently earned accolades for his bold, large-scale pieces.

For tattoo artists, securing a spot at a major convention is no small feat. Render explains the process: “Artists submit portfolios, complete applications, and if accepted, pay a fee for booth space.” Competition is fierce, with conventions often receiving thousands of applications.

“It’s a numbers game,” Render notes. “Only the top-tier artists get selected, and even then, demand for booth space far exceeds availability.”

Ink-ing the Future: Trends and Triumphs

At tattoo conventions, clients typically opt for medium to large tattoos, like large back tattoos. This allows artists like Nunes to demonstrate their technical prowess. His signature work—full backs and sleeves—often requires hours of meticulous execution. “Clients come for big projects,” he says. “But there are also artists who specialize in quick, flash tattoos for those looking to test the waters.”

It’s also a place for networking, as well as a place for the tattoo industry to converge and hand out awards to the best in the industry. Render’s career has been marked by milestones. At the VII ExpoTattoo Estepona 2022, he won third prize in Black and Grey and Blackwork, along with the award for the largest tattoo of the event. These successes built on earlier wins at the I Almeria Tattoo Convention 2021, where he secured second place in Black and Grey. His creativity even extended beyond skin: a tattooed sneaker design earned him first prize at the same event.

High-Profile Moments and Collaborations

One of Render’s most memorable clients is Tomas Riccardini, a frequent collaborator. Together, they won third prize in Black Work at the Granada Tattoo Convention 2022 for a back tattoo. Riccardini later joined Render at the 2024 New York Tattoo Convention, where they spent four days completing an intricate full-back piece—a project that, while not award-winning, drew admiration from fellow artists. “It was a challenge, but a rewarding one,” Render recalls.

Nunes expresses a desire to return to New York’s NY Empire State Tattoo Convention and New York Tattoo Convention, where he previously participated in. Beyond inking, he’s also expanding his role as a judge, with upcoming stints at conventions in Minnesota and Philadelphia, continuing his commitment to nurturing talent in the community in 2026.

The Bigger Picture: Why Tattoo Conventions Matter To Artists

For Render and fellow artists, tattoo conventions are more than just venues for work—they’re hubs for networking, learning, and cultural exchange. “It’s where you promote your craft, connect with peers, and discover new trends,” he says. These events also offer contests and workshops, providing opportunities for recognition and professional growth.

RenderTattoo’s philosophy is clear: “Create unique, high-quality pieces tailored to each client.” His journey—from Spain to New York—reflects a dedication to excellence, innovation, and pushing artistic boundaries. As he continues to ink his mark on the global stage, fans and fellow artists alike await his next masterpiece.
