There have been two Gremlins movies. One is a Christmas classic, and the other is a genius, gonzo sequel. Another sequel, this one without the involvement of Joe Dante, is currently in the works. However, there have already been several assorted Gremlins projects already.
An animated prequel series got two seasons on HBO Max. One was subtitled “Secrets of the Mogwai” and the other was subtitled “The Wild Batch.” It’s heavily geared toward young children, though, so not necessarily for the fans of the two earlier movies. Instead, it’s a gateway to get your kids into Gremlins, perhaps.
A few tie-in books exist, a couple of them newer and, again, aimed toward young children. Those kinds of books are quite common now when it comes to old-school pop culture. It’s very much intended to tap into the affinity of adults who want to enjoy the books they read their kids. Of course, novelizations were common back in the day as well, and both Gremlins and The New Batch got novelizations. The novelization of The New Batch cleverly handles the part of the movie where the film breaks, by the way.
Video games? You bet! While most of the games came out around the original 1984 film, there was a game called Gremlins: Unleashed! released for Game Boy Color in 2001. In that one, you can play as Gizmo or Stripe, depending on if you’re feeling altruistic or impish.
The most-interesting thing to us, though, are the Gremlins rides that existed for many years. Versions of “Warner Bros. Classics and Great Gremlins Adventure” existed in both Australia and Germany. They were largely the same ride, but slightly different. Also, Beetlejuice was involved weirdly. These dark rides had some legs as well. The Australia version was in the park from 1991 until 2001, and the Germany version ran from 1996 until 2004.
So, as you await the third Gremlins movie in 2027, there’s plenty of stuff to peruse.
