Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “Bart Gets An Elephant”

“Bart Gets an Elephant” is so dumb. Also, I love it. It’s one of the five best episodes of The Simpsons. That’s even though it is an episode about the Simpsons family having to take care of an elephant.

Bart wins a radio contest and demands the “gag” prize of an elephant. Then, the family has to take care of Stampy. In addition to all the logistical issues of taking care of an elephant when you live in a suburban city, Stampy is particularly ornery. Eventually, Homer and Marge decide they need to find a new home for Stampy. Homer opts to make money by selling Stampy to an ivory dealer, so Bart and Stampy run away. Eventually, Stampy saves Homer from a tar pit, so Homer agrees to send Stampy to an elephant sanctuary even though they won’t make any money for it. Then, it becomes clear that Stampy is simply a jerk, but now he is safe and free to roam.

This episode is just packed with great jokes. As a child, I was in my fifth grade class and I remembered the joke where Barney, pulled from the tar pit, lights himself on fire and simply says, “Ow.” I then laughed for, like, five minutes. That is one of many brilliant jokes in “Bart Gets an Elephant.” It takes advantage of being a cartoon without being too cartoonish. I love it. It rules. No notes, more or less.
