INTERVIEW: Happy Valley

  • We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed Brisbane-based indie rock band extraordinaire, Happy Valley; greetings and salutations gang and thanks for carving time from a super-busy schedule to speak with us here at Vents Magazine! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say hi and introduce yourselves to our ever-inquisitive readers?

Hey, we are happy valley! We’ve got our main guitarists, Beau and Mitch who also do backing vocals. Our rhythm section, Joel and Mikaela are who keep the momentum going. Finally, we have Trey who ties everything together with his strong and strident vocals along with an added layer of guitar in the mix too!

  • Major kudos and accolades on the stunning debut EP release of Know What You Are which is lighting up record charts across the ever-loving globe even as we speak! Trey, can you talk about what inspired one of the best debut EP’s that’s come down the pike in donkey’s years?

Wow, well I wouldn’t say it’s the best thing, but amazing to hear so thank you so much! I think the inspiration really comes from the amount of life we’ve lived. We’ve come out of some dark places, and choosing to live in the light rather than sit in the darkness has been a huge driving force. We want this EP to be something people can use to process their own emotions, a space where they can vent, feel understood, and hopefully find a bit of release.

  • Beau, rightly lauded industry veteran Tom Megalos handled the producing honors on the Know What You Are EP! What was it like collaborating with this Euripides of music?

Mitchell, in your humble opinion what differentiates the Know What You Are EP from the Distinguished Competition on the 2025 music landscape?

We haven’t approached this EP by asking how marketable it is or where it fits in. We’ve simply created what feels true to us. With 2025 feeling so competitive on social media, it was important to make something that’s purely us which is uncompromised, authentic, and not shaped by trends.

  • Mikaela were card-carrying aficionados of the gem of a ditty Lights On which stands tall and proud on the band-spankin’ new Know What You Are EP! What’s the VH1-Behind the Music origin story on this evergreen of a tune?
We don’t know what VH1 is… but we do know what a VHS is and just like the old VHS, we want to evolve into something new in this world that is our own! In all seriousness, Lights On came from the philosophy that Love is not a possession. This is a song about discovery and unpacking selfish ways of that. It’s come from deep personal experiences.
  • Joel, in the wake of the sizzling Happy Valley debut EP Know What You Are, can fans look forward to catching the band on the touring/performing circuit?

Hell yeah we would love to see people at some of our shows coming up! We would love to make it over to the UK sometime too!

  • Trey, can you give fans and readers alike a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to musically-speaking from Happy Valley in 2026? Might an LP release be in the bands near future?

We have some shows and touring planned for 2026 with the plan to release some music mid-year so stay tuned! We want to try and play as many shows as we can and just keep the momentum going.

  • Beau, how did Happy Valley come together to form the tight band which we hear to such glorious effect on the new Know What You Are EP?

Everything about this came together really naturally for us. We’ve known each other for a long time and we’ve been musicians individually previously. When we all started working together, everything fell into place naturally and seamlessly. We’re incredibly lucky to have been drawn to each other through our shared mindset and ethos.

  • A question for all of you! Who are the folks both in and out of the world of music who have informed and inspired your own indelible pathway?

We have some amazing people in our lives. When we have been at our lowest, we have had people like Steve Smart who owns the studio we rehearse in, in our corners backing us who remind us to keep it simple and just keep going. He has been a consistent mentor for us throughout the years and we are very grateful for him. We’ve also been recently working with our soundy and good friend Paige Rothera. She’s taken care of some of the admin, booking shows and a few other manager-y type roles. She has worked really well with us and become a solid part of the team.

  • Mitchell, at the end of the day what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a-spin to the out-of-this-world new release of the debut Happy Valley EP Know What You Are?

We hope this EP feels like a form of therapy for some people. Almost like a mate grabbing you by the shoulders and saying “wake up!”. We want listeners to walk away feeling lighter, as if the music helped lift a bit of weight off their shoulders, because that is what this EP has meant to us.
