Martin Crane And NHL Expansion

There were a few things that were lamentable about the Frasier quasi-reboot. The lack of some key characters, for example. Also, the fact it wasn’t as funny as the original (or even as funny as Cheers, which we think is a step down from Frasier). There is one thing we particularly lament not getting to be part of the show. The reason behind it is related to both a character absence and a change of venue. We never got to find out what Martin Crane thought about the Seattle Kraken.

Frasier took the titular character from Boston back to his hometown of Seattle. There, he reconnected with his brother Niles and his father Martin. Part of the humor comes from Martin being different from his sons. He’s blue collar, loves cheap beer, and is a big sports fan. The Mariners, the Seahawks, and the SuperSonics were all favorites of Marty. Also, we now realize we didn’t get to hear what Marty thought of the Sonics moving to Oklahoma City, either.

The Frasier reboot went back to Boston, which removed the Seattle of it all. Beyond that, there was no Martin Crane, though with good reason. John Mahoney died in 2018, before either the Kraken or the reboot had debuted.

It would have been fun to see Martin’s thought on having a hockey team to root for. How much would he talk about the Kraken? Would we see Kraken merch in the show? Could they have managed an episode at a hockey game, as they did with a Sonics game? Marty Crane never got to root for the Seattle Kraken. What could have been.

And don’t even get us started about Marty missing out on the Cal Raleigh era…
