1.) We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed UK alt-metal powerhouse collective known far-and-wide as Night Thieves; greetings and salutations gang and thanks for taking time from a busy schedule to go over some exciting musical happenings that a lot of audiophiles are excited for! Before we dive into the Q&A mosh-pit, could you all say ‘hi’ and introduce yourselves to anyone late to the proverbial party?
Hey! We’re NIGHT THIEVES and are made up of Jess (vocals), Paul (guitar), Rick (bass), and Ryan (drums)
2.) Major kudos and accolades on your stunner of a new single Obsidian which is lighting up record charts across the ever-loving globe even as we speak! Jess, what’s the story behind one of the best single releases of ‘25?
Ah, thank you! That’s so kind to say. So Obsidian came about during a period where we had been heavily experimenting with a lot of ideas. We reached a point where we decided to go back to basics to recalibrate and refocus, which seemed to work well as Obsidian was born! It was the first song that really came together during our writing sessions. Lyrically Obsidian is about transformation and finding a centre of calm in our chaotic world.
3.) Paul, in your humble opinion what differentiates Obsidian from the Distinguished Competition on the current day music scene?
With Obsidian we managed to get our sound into what turned out to be quite a commercial sounding song packed with emotion. I think listeners will resonate with the lyrics and the song will sit nicely alongside some of the amazing music that’s being released at the moment.
4.) Rick, what’s the VH1-Behind the Music origin story on how Night Thieves came together to form the tight and harmonious assemblage which we hear to such brilliant effect on the Obsidian single?
It would be so awesome to do that style of documentary! Night Thieves began in around 2017 when Jess and myself were looking to start a new band after our previous project came to an end. In came Paul with a huge set of riffs and big choruses that came to define our sound. Ryan joined in 2023 and brought his massive drum sound along with him. The sound you hear on Obsidian is us all gelling and making the music we want to hear.
5.) Ryan, what does the touring/performing dance card look like for Night Thieves in the wake of the October 24 release of Obsidian?
We’re finishing 2025 with two dates, one in Wales on 15th November and the other in London on 6th December. For 2026 we will soon be announcing tour dates and festival dates but we can confirm now that we have been added to the Hammerdown festival lineup and we cannot wait for that! More announcements on our socials very soon.
6.) Jess, word ‘round industry campfire has it that Night Thieves are poised to unleash their highly-anticipated debut album in the Spring of 2026; major congratulations! Can you give our ever-inquisitive readers a hint or three as to what they can expect and look forward to with the premiere LP?
The rumours are correct! Thank you, yes we have an album on the way and we will be sharing more details on that very soon. What I can say is that where Obsidian gives our listeners familiarity with our previous release, Polarity, the album will deliver plenty of twists and turns and the next single will offer something very different.
7.) Paul, Night Thieves is reteaming with Grammy-nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda for the forthcoming debut LP; congrats! What does the collaboration process between band and Romesh look like while in the studio working on new material?
We knew we wanted to go back to Romesh after the fun we had recording Polarity and learning so much from him. We worked really hard prior to the recording sessions to get the songs into great shape and complete as we could take them. In the studio Romesh really focused on the important parts that make the songs pop as well as make some minor tweaks and adjustments that make a big difference. So for drums he would work with Ryan to maybe create a bit more space in sections or add some extra parts in, setting a solid foundation for the bass to go down. Guitar wise Romesh and I would try different guitars and pair them with the right sound for whatever part we were working on. Romesh dialed in the sounds but he also wanted to use a few guitar parts I recorded on the demos. For vocals it’s mainly about tweaking the attack and phrasing, as well as coming up with some lush harmonies and layering. Overall it’s a nice, relaxed and collaborative experience. Not only does Romesh get the best out of us but he is lovely to be around along with his team.
8.) A question for all of you: Who are some of the folks both in and out of the world of music who have informed and inspired your own pathways?
Rick: I’ve drawn influence from so many bands in my playing, such as Incubus, Deftones and A Perfect Circle that I always go back to. More recently there has been so much amazing music coming out from the likes of Thornhill, Northlane and Novelists that have really influenced me.
Paul: I was brought up on classic rock and was influenced by a lot of bands that came out in the 90’s. GnR, RATM, Korn, Muse, and Incubus. More recently Spiritbox, Bring Me the Horizon and Architects have produced some amazing music. Two bands that have blown me away in the last year have been Nova Twins and House Of Protection.
Ryan: There’s also so many great up and coming UK acts that inspire us like Dead Pony, Artio, Defences, and Cober Mouth to name a few.
Jess: Ditto what the guys said but I’ll add Stevie Nicks and Nirvana to the list. Also really impressed with the latest releases from Poppy.
9.) Rick, how is the new Obsidian single similar to some of the past music from Night Thieves? How is it different?
Obsidian takes the sound we have been building on for the last three EPs and turns it up to 11! With each release we feel like we have grown more and more into our sound and this song is the culmination of all that has come before. This was also the first time we had worked on songs with Ryan and he brought in his influences to add into the mix. It’s different in that it sounds so much bigger than before, but it still has those characteristics that make up the Night Thieves sound.
10.) Ryan, any final thoughts you might like to leave readers with regarding all the exciting things going on for Night Thieves in the coming weeks and months?
I don’t want to spoil the surprise so I’ll just say we have a lot of exciting announcements coming up imminently and into 2026!
