Singer-Songwriter Kim Edwards Releases “Vignettes,” An Intimate Album of Story-Driven Songs

Kim Edwards has been working on this album for ten years, and honestly? It shows – in the best way possible.

“Vignettes” is ten songs that feel more like short stories set to music. Edwards, who’s based in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, has always been drawn to narrative songwriting, but this collection takes it to another level entirely.

The opener “Ashes to Ashes” deals with the messy aftermath of a breakup. “The Seafarer’s Song” puts you on a boat in the middle of nowhere. “Raised by Wolves” is about that person we’ve all known – the one you love but who can’t seem to settle down with anyone. Then there’s “Steinbeck,” which pulls from Depression-era history and features some seriously impressive horn work.

Edwards recorded the album with producer Jared Salte at Salt Shaker Studios. They brought in Rob Szabo for strings and got Fletch Wiley and Phil Miller to handle the brass on “Steinbeck.” The whole thing has this old-school, cinematic feel – like if Taylor Swift’s “folklore” had been made in 1947.

“We didn’t worry about making everything perfect,” Edwards says. “Sometimes the imperfect take told the story better.”

The album jumps between intimate piano moments and full orchestral arrangements. Edwards has classical training, and you can hear it, but she’s not showing off – everything serves the songs.

If you’re into artists like Regina Spektor or Ingrid Michaelson, this will probably hit the right spot. Edwards has been around the block – she’s opened for The Beach Boys, played the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and had her cover of “Auld Lang Syne” rack up 150,000 streams on Spotify. Her music has ended up in ads for Disney Weddings and other brands.

But “Vignettes” feels different from her previous work. More personal, maybe. Definitely more ambitious.

The album artwork, shot by Bruce Kite and designed by Victoria Strout, leans into that vintage aesthetic. Everything about this project feels deliberate – like Edwards finally had the time and resources to make exactly what she wanted.

The complete track listing includes “Ashes to Ashes,” “The Seafarer’s Song,” “Tamed,” “Winter,” “Raised by Wolves,” “The Cure,” “Please Let Me Go,” “Steinbeck,” “The Cowboy Philosopher,” and “Far (Strings Version).”
