INTERVIEW: NELVEN

1.) We’re very excited to have some time today with acclaimed electro-pop artist, doctor, model, and- WHEW! – athlete NELVEN; greetings and salutations NELVEN and thanks for taking time from a super-busy schedule to talk with our readers here at Vents Magazine! Before we meander down the proverbial musical Q&A pathway, how is 2025 finding you and yours?

Hi guys! Firstly, a massive thank you to you guys at Vents for reaching out to me. Its an honor to talk to you today. So 2025 has really been a year of great growth personally. It’s great to be able to say that I have really developed some of the best friendships I have ever had, being able to do what I love every day – both in medicine and music, and just having the bright horizon of releasing my favorite songs I have ever worked on. I am proud of where I am today and this year I can honestly say that I find myself thriving.

2.) Major kudos and accolades on your freshly-minted new single Melody which is set to light up record charts across the ever-loving world when it premieres this August 29! Starting at the top, can you talk about what inspired one of the very best single releases of ‘25?

Your enthusiasm is contagious and sincerely appreciated. MELODY came from a place of nostalgia. I grew up in a time where punk rock bands like Greenday and 30 Seconds to Mars and even 5 Seconds of Summer shaped my personal growth curves and coming-of-age experiences. Music has evolved so much but I was inspired to give the youth of today a similar experience and exposure to vibey punk rock songs and so I wrote MELODY = a super cool punk rock song intent on passionately capturing the essence of life and heartbreak.

3.) Who handled the producing honors on Melody and what did the in-studio collaboration between artist and producer look like while fashioning and shaping this new gem of a ditty?

I work with the most amazing and talented people here in South Africa. MELODY was first written spontaneously in my home after which I took an unfinished track concept which was then beautifully produced by Hugo Ludik form Muse Studios. We have worked together before and work beautifully together – always making magic. I bring the melodies and lyrics and Hugo captures the moods with production of the track. Like any work of art – MELODY started as a concept and then took form in spontaneous bursts of inspiration – with the lyrics to the second verse written in my car on my way to the studio,  just minutes before the final recording. This makes the song spontaneous and authentic and just made me love it more.

4.) In your humble opinion, what differentiates Melody from the Distinguished Competition on the current day music landscape?

The music scene is definitely saturated but I believe we all have a place in the sun. I am not here to compete with anyone but rather to be an authentic artist true to my voice and styles. I believe in the relatability of the song MELODY and its catchy melodies and am proud of being able to create music of this quality. I can’t wait for people to love it as much as I do.

5.) In the wake of the August 29 release of the new single Melody, can fans look forward to catching you on the touring/performing circuit?

Of course! My tours will initiate in South Africa but, with MELODY being my debut single release in the states, I hope to see more stages in the beautiful US as well.

6.) Speaking of live performances, what can a fan of yours who has never seen you perform in a live setting look forward to and expect when catching you in a show?

Authenticity and fun. I am a musician at heart and, despite having high standards of professionalism, I am always driven by my love for people and engagement with them. Engagement and old-school energy where viewers tend to share the love for the moment with me.

7.) Should discerning music aficionados keep eyes and ears on high alert for even more amazing music from you before the end of the year, perhaps in the form of an EP or LP release?

I don’t want to say too much but an EP should drop early next year. In the meantime NELVEN has 2 more singles lined up for release before the end of the year.

8.) As we noted at the top, along with being a rightly lauded music artist, you’re also a much respected and sought out oncologist; thank you for your service in this aspect of life which will sadly touch most of us at one point or another. Has it been difficult balancing your medical existence alongside your artistic and athletic lives, or do you find that each one enriches the other?

You have such a beautiful way of asking questions. I have found that they are not competing components but rather different pillars in my life each playing its own supportive role. Logistically they also rarely overlap – with medicine taking up working hours and music often mostly after hours or on weekends. In combination they provide a beautiful balance between logic, creativity and physical health that I cherish.

9.) You hail from South Africa. How do those specific roots inform you not only as an artist, but also as a person?

I am really proud of South Africa and the history of challenges that we have faced and overcame as a country. It is rich with natural beauty and diversity and I believe that living here has played a big role in developing authentic humility and a love of people and nature. I have always found that being so close to nature tunes us into our inner selves and helps to ignite creativity and I can’t help but think that South Africa’s natural beauty and regular interaction with a diverse social community has shaped my ways of thinking and writing music.

10.) At the end of the day, what do you hope listeners walk away with after giving many-a-listen to your stunner of a new single Melody?

MELODY is a fun punk-rock song intended to be related to and vibed to. I hope to recreate in listeners the rich moments that I am nostalgic about when I think about growing up with easy-listening and punchy punk rock jams.
