The Earth & All Within Breaks Ground with Debut Self-Titled Album Release

Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter James Ellis steps into the spotlight with the release of his debut self-titled album, The Earth & All Within, out now. Anchored in raw emotion and rich storytelling, the orchestral-meets-rock hybrid album finds James trading pavement for pine needles as he delves deep into themes of growth, resilience, and the collective unconscious. “It was such a novel idea, a rock band with a string section. It felt like something that should have already existed, so I went ahead and did it myself,” says James.

Drawing inspiration from rock heavyweights like Green Day, Radiohead, and Foo Fighters, The Earth & All Within sprouts from the success of its punchy lead single, ‘I Never Liked You (Anyway…).’ “It was one of those songs that came out in 10 minutes. I knew I wanted a big traditional rock song for this project so I had the vibe before the hook. Once those chorus lyrics came into mind, I knew exactly what the song was,” James Ellis told Given To Rock in a recent interview.

Recorded between Milkboy the Studio and Gradwell House Recording, and featuring the Philadelphia String Quartet (whose violist had been a touring member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra), the album blossomed into a confident debut. Dubbed a “Millennial Rock Opera,” the album bridges the old world and the new with compositions that  pay tribute to both British and American rock influences, unfolding across a 10-track journey.

The Earth & All Within draws its essence from a rich mix of sources with ‘We All Fall Down’ echoing mid-2000s emo anthems and tracks like ‘Can’t Wait 2CU (Again)’ melding influence from bubblegum pop tunes to Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Yet through it all, a common ember winds through the record: James’s enduring love of orchestral strings. Brought further to life by drummer Mason Ingling, the album unfolds like an epic soundscore, enveloping the listener in a lush sonic thicket.
