Weekend Movie Recommendations: Best Of 2022 Edition

My top three movies of 2022 are all on Amazon Prime! Why not recommend them for an evening of movie watching? Well, maybe more of a day of movie watching. Look, you’ll have to carve out some time. Also, I will not be putting them in order of quality, but what will make for the best viewing experience. These movies don’t otherwise go together, but quality is quality, and my theme is: These movies are really good!

I think you should start with Tar. Now, it is the least-intense, most-contemplative of the trio. You aren’t going to get revved up watching Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tar, problematic composer. However, it feels odd anywhere else here. Blanchett is great in this movie, by the way. She should have won Best Actress over Michelle Yeoh.

Then, my top movie of 2022, which is Nope. I admittedly wasn’t into Jordan Peele’s previous too movies, Get Out and Us. They were too silly in terms of conceit. Nope doesn’t have that problem. It’s a thriller about man vs. nature that’s shot beautifully and has a few great performances in it. Also, I appreciated the way everything ended up unfolding. My only beef is the couple moments that were clearly only included so they could be used to spookify the trailers.

Alright, I hope you are feeling good, because we’re ending with Babylon. You know, a three-hour film that feels stuffed even with that runtime. I will say this: Hold out if you are feeling unsure early on. The movie throws a lot at you early, perhaps to make sure you are prepared. This is a crass, graphic, weird film about early Hollywood. It’s also really good. Afterwards, though, I expect you to be too worn out to watch another movie, so I’m ending with Babylon. Hope you don’t have weird dreams. Involving elephants.
