There is a lot of talk of the height of male movie stars. Many of them, as they say, are on the shorter side of things. Recently, I saw an episode of McMillan & Wife for the first time. It was one of the NBC Mystery Movie shows, which was best exemplified by Columbo. The show ran for six seasons and 40 episodes. McMillan & Wife was fairly good, and it stars Rock Hudson, a movie star from the ‘50s who had moved to TV stardom for the ‘70s. I had seen Hudson in movies before, but watching McMillan & Wife, I noticed something: Rock Hudson was super tall.
Hudson, it turns out stood a reported 6’4’’. Seeing him in McMillan & Wife was definitely notable. He towers over other actors, even cops in hats! Hudson is playing a police commissioner, so it maybe adds to his presence that he’s so tall. I’ve seen him act opposite Doris Day in some ‘50s romantic comedies, but I can’t recall his height sticking out then. Maybe I didn’t have enough reference points for his height.
Anyway, apparently before the sixth and final season the show was changed to McMillan, which his wife and young son killed off in a plane crash. Yeesh! Now, the show is no Columbo, but it would have been interesting to see a crossover between those two shows. A little Rock Hudson. A little Peter Falk. Maybe even get McCloud in the mix.
