The 1980s were a tough year for Best Picture winners, at least in hindsight. After a robust ‘70s, it was a real dip in quality of winner. The 1990s will be a step up, but what will the overarching quality of the Best Picture Oscar winners be? Also, which film will rank 10th, and which will top the charts? Here is my ranking of every film the Academy gave Best Picture to.
10. American Beauty
9. The English Patient
8. Silence of the Lambs
7. Forrest Gump
6. Schindler’s List
5. Braveheart
4. Shakespeare in Love
3. Dances with Wolves
2. Titanic
1. Unforgiven
You know, in hindsight, the 1990s might not actually be all that much better than the 1980s. This is not a good decade of winners. I don’t even like Titanic all that much! A lot of people really enjoy Silence of the Lambs, but it’s not really my thing. I feel like American Beauty, The English Patient, and Forrest Gump are all generally considered poor winners. That being said, I don’t think Forrest Gump is bad. My opinion of that one might actually be higher than many these days.
If I am going to give the 1990s the nod over the 1980s, it’s in the fact that Unforgiven is better than any winner from the ‘80s. Clint Eastwood’s film kicked off a bit of a revisionist Western run, but with good cause, because this one pops. I don’t have any strong feeling either way about the genre, but Unforgiven is a sterling example.
I felt confident the ‘90s would be an improvement upon the ‘80s, but when called upon (by myself) to get to ranking, that proved to barely be true. I think the 2000s will be a step up from the ‘90s…but now I can’t be so sure.
