How can I find a four-socketed Monarch for the Spirit shield? This question is often asked by returning Diablo II veterans or brand-new players exploring Diablo II Resurrected for the first time. The influx of new or nostalgic players is absolutely great, and this guide is made to help answer that very question.
The Common Advice – And Why It’s Not Always Good
The most common advice people give is to go to high player count Cow levels with no Magic Find, then slaughter everything until a Monarch drops. While it is true that high player count games increase the number of drops (and thus improve your odds of finding a white or socketed Monarch), this advice isn’t ideal for the kind of player who’s asking the question, someone whose gear is so basic they don’t even have a Spirit shield yet.
Think about it: how well would a weakly geared character fare against monsters with huge life pools? Not great.
High Player Count Cows: A Risky Strategy
Take, for example, an Energy Shield Nova Sorceress at level 72 with imperfect gear—maybe a Spirit sword, Stealth armor, Lore helm, and nothing more. In high player count Cows, even with Static Field and Nova, the Sorceress struggles, the Mercenary nearly dies, and the whole experience is rough. If you’re a highly geared level 95 character like a decked-out Javazon, sure, you’ll do fine—but at that point, you don’t even need a Spirit Monarch anymore.
So, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, you need tools and knowledge to help you choose where to farm based on your build and current strength.
Important Note: Farm in Hell Difficulty
Monarchs are best farmed in Hell difficulty. You generally won’t find them in Nightmare. While Nightmare Terror Zones may offer some exceptions, they’re not recommended because they sacrifice the chance to find high-value D2R items like a Jah rune in Hell.
So, everything discussed here applies to Hell difficulty farming.
Best Farming Spots for Monarchs
1. The Forgotten Tower (Act 1)
One of the best early Hell farming zones. After reaching Hell, or even slightly before, head to the Black Marsh in Act 1. Teleport or run until you find The Forgotten Tower.
- On the way down, you’ll encounter weak packs of monsters.
- These are much easier to handle than Hell Cows.
- While clearing them, you can find white or socketed Monarchs.
- The Countess at the bottom drops runes needed for Spirit.
- Ghosts along the way have elevated rune drop chances.
- Even armor racks along the way can drop Monarchs.
About 80% of white or socketed Monarchs found on ladder come from this route. It’s a great multitask run: rune farming, monster packs for loot, and Monarch hunting, all in one.
2. Stony Tomb (Act 2)
This is an Area Level 85 zone, meaning every unique in the game can drop here, including high runes and Monarchs.
- Great for fire or cold builds like Fire Druids, Trap Assassins, Fire Sorcs, Blizzard Sorcs, or Frozen Orb builds.
- No inherent cold immunes (except one minor enemy).
- Hydra/Fireball builds perform well here.
This is less about targeting Monarchs only and more about farming efficiently, build-appropriate zones where you can find Monarchs, runeword bases, high runes, and uniques all at once, and you can easily buy D2R items from AKRPG.COM!
3. The Pit (Act 1)
Another classic Area Level 85 zone, especially good for physical damage builds like Wind Druids.
- Weak monsters.
- Drop tables include Monarchs, high runes, and every unique in the game.
4. Ancient Tunnels (Act 2)
Excellent for cold builds like the Blizzard Sorceress.
- Also a level 85 area.
- No cold immunes (except the occasional unique).
- You can find everything here: Monarchs, runes, bases, and uniques.
5. Frigid Highlands (Act 5)
Ideal for non-cold builds.
- Clear Eldritch and possibly Shenk.
- Quick elite packs—good for adding into other farming runs.
- Not ideal for spamming Monarch farming, but efficient if you’re already nearby.
Cow Level: A Niche Strategy
Yes, Cows do drop Monarchs and have an elevated rune drop chance. However, this is only recommended for specific builds, such as Lightning Fury Javazon, being the most notable.
It’s not a beginner-friendly approach due to the high difficulty and gear requirements. But if you can handle it, it can yield results.
Should You Avoid Magic Find?
Some say you should have zero Magic Find to increase the odds of white drops like Monarchs. Technically true, but practically flawed. Would you be mad if, while hunting for a Monarch, you found a Shako, Arachnid’s Mesh, or even a perfect Death’s Web? Of course not. So don’t overthink it. Even with 25 Magic Find and budget gear, you can still find Monarchs. Stack some Magic Find, you won’t regret it.
