Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “Mr. Plow”

Snow plowing owes a lot to “Mr. Plow.” This Simpsons episode is the only reason I ever think about it as a professional notion. Also, it’s a great episode, so it’s got a lot going for it.

“Mr. Plow” is one of the more-frivolous “Homer has a new job” episodes, but also one of the most reasonable and one of the best. Homer buys a snow plow. Fair enough! It’s not like him getting a job in some industry he’s never worked in before. At first he scuffles, then he figures it out. Then Barney gets into the space as Plow King. They battle, they reconcile, and the Judeo-Christian god made all the snow melt to spite them. Okay, so that’s kind of a trip.

Adam West shows up, as does Linda Rondstadt. The episode is packed with good jokes. It’s slight, of course, because it’s about Homer having a job you know has to come to a conclusion. Even so, it’s fun and it stands out. “Mr. Plow” is iconic. On The Simpsons. That isn’t easy. Maybe it isn’t ambitious or substantive, but it’s funny and it’s fun and it does more than most television shows can do. That is plenty of praise, to be sure. Plus, there’s the catchy jingle.
