Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “Lisa’s First Word”

Oh man, “Lisa’s First Word” is a good episode and one of those “They never thought the show would be on for this long” episodes. It establishes Lisa as being born during the 1984 Olympics. Yeah, that has been retconned in a major way. At this point, that would make her almost as old as Homer and Marge. Time comes for us all.

To be clear, I have no issue with this. The show can be malleable in terms of a timeline if it wants. “Lisa’s First Word” is a good episode. It’s kind of sweet. It’s not the most-emotionally-resonant episode, but it works. It’s basically a flashback to when Bart was a toddler and Lisa was born. Bart has a classic first-kid reaction and loathes Lisa. Then her first word is “Bart” and all is well. Of course, in the present, Bart and Lisa don’t get along. Oh, and then Maggie legit talks for the first time in the show’s run. She says “daddy.” That’s surprising, all things considered. Kids often say “dada” as a first worst, but “daddy” is a bit trickier to say.

The story is well-engrained into the Simpson family’s history, and it’s a sweet enough episode and funny enough episode. It’s just not remarkable. It could use some better jokes. Time, of course, also doesn’t help with an episode that pegs itself to 1984. Ah well. Time makes fools of us all.
