Joe Dante made two Gremlins movies, both of them fun horror comedies. There was never a third Gremlins movie. They did make an HBO Max show, but it’s animated and not really a horror-comedy. It’s more of a gentle show for families that isn’t really all that funny in the slightest. If they ever decided to make a third Gremlins movie, though, there is a film out there that kind of serves as the template. Well, two films now, one animated and one live-action. That would be Lilo & Stitch.
Stitch may be an alien, but he’s also basically, “What if a mogwai and a gremlin found a happy medium?” His look is between the two poles. Gremlins look a menacing and a little gross, almost H.R. Giger-lite. Mogwais are, of course, furry and cutesy. Stitch has a predatory-animal hint to his look, but he’s also furry and has the hard edges sanded off of him. Plus, his noises are mogwai-esque.
Stitch brings the chaos of the gremlins, but with less menace. He’d never try to kill Dick Miller, you know? When he’s causing chaos, he doesn’t have ill intent. Stitch is not Gizmo, but he’s certainly not like a gremlin, or even an evil mogwai.
A third Gremlins movie could introduce a mogwai that splits the difference. Or, well, maybe we don’t need another Gremlins movie. We now have two of them, and two Lilo & Stitch movies as well.
