Ryan Reynolds Pitches an ‘R’-Rated “Star Wars” Film to Disney

We might have expected the suggestion of an R-rated Star Wars movie from the likes of Quentin Tarantino or Paul Verhoeven, after all these are visionaries in the world of film who have always been envelope-pushers in the industry. Heck, there’s even precedence for assuming that an f-laced Star Wars might one day stem from the pen of Tarantino: The Pulp Fiction auteur after all famously and very briefly was behind an attempt to revitalize the Star Trek franchise by boldly going where no other writer/director ever had in that sci-fi epic’s long and convoluted history. So you can imagine our collective surprise here at Vents HQ when word came in from our trusty telegraph that it wasn’t Tarantino or the Marquis de Sade actively involved in pushing a saucy version of the Rebels and the Imperial Army, but rather that rascally goofball we all know and love as Ryan Reynolds…

From our Deadpool fanatics over at The Hollywood Reporter comes the mind-blowing revelation that Ryan Reynolds is actively championing Disney for an R-rated Star Wars film.

“I pitched to Disney,” the Free Guy actor recently said in a sit-down interview. “I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property? It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use.’ And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Disney and Lucasfilm are legendary for the tight grip they maintain on the Star Wars property, though George Lucas himself – father of the whole passel of characters which most audiences relate to as being the classic or the ‘real’ Star Wars – has allowed a certain amount of leeway as far as how other creatives handle his toys. And though Reynolds himself would prefer not to act in a Star Wars movie (claiming it would be a ‘bad fit’), he’s open-minded about possibly handling the creative side of things.

“I’m not saying I want to be in it,” Reynolds demurred when pressed. “I’d want to producer and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP (intellectual property) subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really well with Star Wars because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”

Of course, Ryan Reynolds more than knows his way around the Hollywood scene (he certainly knows the lingo, too, eh wot?), as is evidenced by his writing and producing of the highest R-rated movie ever released, Deadpool & Wolverine. Oh, and he also acted in the sucker, too. So perhaps Marvel and Disney might do well to heed this thespian’s sage advice? And it’s not like Star Wars hasn’t gotten a little riskier over the years. After all, the new Disney+ Star Wars series Andor has introduced viewers to a little more of the Dark side than they’re perhaps used to.

Whether or not an R-rated Star Wars movie ever happens or not, fear not for Ryan Reynolds: When he’s not counting his huge paychecks from his Deadpool flicks, he’s apparently hot on the idea for a new Deadpool film which showcase even more X-Men characters. The man is not hurting for work, that’s for sure.

We’ll keep our Magic 8 Ball queued up for any developments on that mythical Ryan Reynolds R-rated Star Wars movie, True Believers. Until then, stay frosty and stay safe this Memorial Day weekend!
