TBS’s TV-Mining History

TBS has long been thought of as a venue for sports, but it’s also had plenty of television shows. Many of them have been comedies, and the network branded itself as “very funny” for a while. What TBS has often been as well, though, is venue for shows trying to build upon television’s past.

This doesn’t even need to include shows that moved to TBS from other networks to continue ongoing runs. That’s what happened with Cougar Town and American Dad, though the latter has now returned to FOX. Did you know there was a show called The New Leave It to Beaver in the 1980s? It’s true! That was before the real surge in nostalgia projects based on ‘50s and ‘60s TV shows. Technically, the first season aired on the Disney Channel, but the next three seasons – yes this show ran four seasons – aired on TBS.

They aired The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest, at the time the latest iteration on Johnny Quest. Also, we don’t know how one has “real adventures” when they are a cartoon character. Then again, The Real Ghostbusters also existed, so maybe it was a copyright thing? You surely remember when they brought back the game show The Joker’s Wild, right? No?

Of course, most infamously, and in delightfully-bizarre fashion, they did The Real Gilligan’s Island. This was a competition show based on the goofy-ass sitcom, but mixed with Survivor. And yet, they did two seasons of it! Was it just an excuse to have their Mary Ann’s and Ginger’s in bathing suits? Maybe. By the way, one of the Millionaires won the first season, and one of the Skippers won the second. Yes, each season started with multiple versions of all the Gilligan’s Island characters.

These days on TBS, you can see baseball and hockey and pro wrestling. Oh, and also The Joe Schmo Show, a reboot of another channel’s show. Now that’s the TBS we know and love!
