Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “Lisa The Beauty Queen”

Beauty pageants definitely feel more of a ‘90s thing, and obviously The Simpsons went down that route. They did it through the prism of Lisa, though, which is both a surprise, but also perhaps sensible. It also makes for a good Homer and Lisa episode.

Lisa is feeling down on herself, so Homer sells his ticket to go on the Duff blimp, a dream of his, to pay the entrance fee for Lisa to end a cigarette company sponsored children’s beauty pageant. Lisa finishes second and when the winning Amber Dempsey is struck by lightning, Lisa becomes the Little Miss Springfield. Of course, Lisa has a social conscience so she fights back against Laramie so she gets dethroned. However, Homer has succeeded in helping Lisa with her self-esteem so she’s happy and he’s happy.

It’s a sweet episode for an episode of TV about a children’s beauty pageant. It does the Homer and Lisa thing well without hammering it too hard. Plus, we get Homer’s “Blimpy Boy” song. Now, the beauty pageant stuff doesn’t work super well, and Dempsey is a nothing character. “Lisa the Beauty Queen” is more memorable than it is good, but it’s still a perfectly fine episode of TV.
