Swift ‘Simpsons’ Summaries: “Homer The Heretic”

The Simpsons and religion have an interesting relationship. While the show often pokes fun at religion, especially Christianity, the Simpson family goes to church regularly. Much of Springfield seems to. Even “Homer the Heretic” ends with a reestablishing of the norm in town and something of a green light for religion.

Homer skips church. He has a great time (including his famous butter wrapped with a waffle) while church sucks. That leads Homer to decide to stop going to church. He doesn’t even eschew religion! He just doesn’t want to go to church any longer. That freaks Marge out, but then the Simpson house catches on fire, he’s saved by Ned, Krusty, and Apu, and Homer learns something of a lesson.

Other than the waffle concoction, “Homer the Heretic” is best known for being the first appearance of God on The Simpsons. Notably, he was the first character to have five fingers on each hand on The Simpsons. Homer and God have an entertaining conversation, and the episode is all-in-all a good one. George Meyer, the writer of the episode, is an astute observationist when it comes to the remarkably banal, or perhaps the banally remarkable, elements of being a person in the world. Even if I myself am not an enthusiast for religion, I still quite enjoy “Homer the Heretic.”
