So acclaimed actress Scarlett Johansson has a very buzzed about motion picture on the horizon which marks her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, a film whose central protagonist is played by 95-year-old actress June Squibb and for that very fact alone – a main character whose only references in life aren’t cell phones and viral trending videos – this is one new movie which has raced to the tip-top of our ‘Must See’ List (yep, we keep those, Dear and Constant Reader). But before we all rush out to check out this film, its director wants you to know one very important thing: She is not happy that Avengers: Endgame was all but shut out of the 2019 Academy Awards.
From our Ghost World aficionados over at Variety comes the hard-hitting news that, hot on the heels of the Cannes premiere of her directorial debut, actress Scarlett Johansson is taking some perhaps deserved shots at the ever-controversial selection process of nominated films at the vaunted annual Academy Awards. Specifically, Johansson wants the world to know that, in her humble opinion, the superhero magnum opus Avengers: Endgame was unjustly shut out from any major nominations by the Academy a few years back.
“How did this film not get nominated for an Oscar?” the Horse Whisperer star quizzed a reporter during a recent sit-down. “It was an impossible movie that should not have worked, that really works as a film — and also, it’s one of the most successful films of all time.”
Of course, Johansson’s Marvel character of The Black Widow bought the proverbial farm in that most recent Avengers outing, an onscreen death which many fans still manet to this day. Does this passion from fandom inspire the actress to attempt to figure out a way to bring her character back? After all, this is comics we’re talking about here where the concept of death is usually temporary at best.
“It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” Johansson mused. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them.”
As most folks know who even very casually follow the Oscars, the omissions the Academy makes are sometimes more headline grabbing that the films and actors and actresses recognized with nominations (hey, we’re still miffed about that Corey Haim omission in the Academy’s annual In Memoriam segment – For shame, Academy). So, in that sense, Johansson and her fellow Avengers castmates are at least in very good company.
Look for Eleanor the Great and Jurassic World Rebirth – both featuring the magical touch of Scarlett Johansson – in theatres in 2025!
